And yes....

Good article, thanks for posting 🙂

edit: though it makes me mad

You can also use huge amounts of money to demolish perfectly good grounds & build the favorites brand new stadiums & training facilities whilst others have dilapidated ancient not fit for purpose venues..... It fkn sucks....

Yep I agree, might be time to adopt a draft pick system or we may never see the talent spread evenly. the caps an utter joke and the double standards stink hard too.

If memory serves me correct the salary cap was never iniatlly meant to be the stand alone means to even the comp. It was originally intended to run along side the draft and we know what happened there.
Would have had more chance of success than what we have now.

You’ve all seen my views on this over the last six months.

It’s no different to the English Super League ( in fact remarkably exactly the same ).

As Knox says

There’s six teams that can win it, 2 others that are there because there has to be 8.

The other 8 fight it out so as to not get the spoon.

Largely been that way for a fair while , and will be for a fair while to come.

If we get bought out by a rich middle eastern benefactor willing to throw gazillions away for fun we’ll be successful again.

Until then , we fight to keep off the bottom.

That’s our win, and all the powers to be will allow.

100% correct!

The draft was meant to spread the playing talent. It wasn't the cap that was meant to spread the talent.

The first cap was originally a set % of the club's income, to stop the club going broke. In other words, a club could spend a lot of money so long as it had a lot of income and never went over the % spend that applied to all clubs. It encouraged clubs to find other income sources and sponsors.

But when the draft got defeated the NSWRL and then NRL changed the % to a set $ amount for each club, forcing a spread of talent (or so it was hoped).

Surprising the NRL players haven't attacked the cap as a restraint of trade and for the same reasons the draft was beaten in court.

Thats right thanks for jogging my memory and it was the players not the clubs that tore it down.
If only they the courts didn't go their way we may not likely but may have had a chance for an even spread.
Uncle nic would still find a way though.

Remember when there was the 13 import rule? Maybe we need something similar again. If you don't come through the junior ranks or at least Flegg, you are an import.

Once again Malcolm Knox shows us that he's the only actual journalist who writes about Rugby League.
Wow, what an awesome, refreshingly accurate article. Well done, Mr Knox, you have inadvertently become my hero.

Compare this article with something written by, oh, I don't know. James Hooper, perhaps? Baldy's recent masterpiece of sycophantic, diarrhoea about his feud with a Tigers centre is a real doozy. Read it with a healthy dose of cautuon, it will melt your brain like jelly on a pile of hot embers.

Mr Knox's beautifully penned statement has taken me back to a time, (in a galaxy far away,) where journalism was an actual profession.

Pure, fact based artistry!

Great Article by Knox. Although the roosters and some of the other prime suspects manipulate the cap, I think Manly is mostly in its current malaise due to paying the top guys too much compared to their output. I don't think this mistake is made by the top clubs.

I said on another thread that Marty is a good player but is paid too much. What is is output worth? Im making educated guesses here without stats, and without knowing exact salaries, but i feel like he's a 500k player, not a 700k player.

Lets look at the other 3..DCE "feels" like his output is around a 800k player..whats he on ? 1.3m? Jake is on 900k and his output is probably around 600k/700k...Turbo..well not sure how you look at this one given injuries..but lets assume he can play 75% games this year..whats he on? 1.3m? His output is probably worth his salary if fully fit but lets assume 75% output given games played. So he should be around a 900k player.

Ive obviously made a lot of assumptions above and its off the top of my head in terms of salaries and presumed output. But either way the output from our Top4 salaries is way below what they are paid. Im looking at a deficit of $1.3m to comparable player output over 4 players! Thats crazy. Imagine we had those 4 guys and another 1.3m to upgrade the squad.

You can make your own assumptions regarding what these guys are paid and what their $ output should be. But either way you can see the point
