Kicking game - Good and Bad..

It was not Perfect, but a big improvement on earlier games, particularly attacking kicks near the line....an almost certain try went begging when cust grubbered back across the post with DCE winning the race...but the ball hits the post ???
THe long kicking game also an improvement and really served it to Ponga, with great kick/chase (mostly), which I liked.
On the flipside, Newcastle again scored most tries off kicks....and there was no Taufua to blame.
Manly seem so vulnerable to defending kicks and so often end up tries against us....not sure if there is some bad handling or not enough support players rushing back to help their mates, but happens to often to be a coincidence and even after great goal line defence bar the pathetic Mann try, these kick tries are an option opposition are having far too much success with.

The entire game unfortunately seemed to turn when Funa was caught with the ball on the last.
Cherry had ample opportunity to get something away, and didn't, putting pressure on rookies to come up with an answer.

And, Cherry was tackled on the 4that least twice, leaving a 1 legged Cust and dummy half to take responsibility.

Overall much improved, but plenty to work on, especially for DCE.

Cust is good at short kicks, dce has lost that touch a bit and too many bombs.

Both were better overall though

Kicking game is mindless at best
Not NRL standard
The effort put in by the boys deserved better.
DCE has always been one of my favourites, but under pressure, his late tackle plays and direction of the team around the park are simply not good enough

Our kicking game is so far below par it's not funny. What's with the bombs yesterday ?? did any of them actually land in what you would call an attacking spot. There were 2 or 3 genuine up and unders that just went straight up in the air, and plenty too deep including that brain explosion of a kick that gave away the 7 tackle set. I think Cust got a forced drop out, and DCE finally threaded the needle for Jetski, so there were a couple of positives.

Same old story though, DCE needs to run more - but if he runs and gets tackled there is no kicker, so he doesn't run as much any more. Opposition know if he is primarily the only kicker, they rush up on him and give him less time.

I'm liking Cust having more responsibility with 5th tackle kicks, DCE is giving that to him. DCE is fine running an attacking play and getting tackled as he thinks Cust is good enough.

On a whole the kicking game was pretty good in those window conditions, we kept turning Newcastle around and we're making Newcastle work hard all game.

The 7th tackle kick by DCE didn't cost us the game some of the poor arm grabs and lazy inside defence did but would of been so much better for that kick to land in field, so was a poor mistake for sure. I thought we did that the whole game, fought hard in long periods of the game but then dropped it in the first or second tackle in good field position or gave them penalties which put them right on the attack.

If we had of controlled the ball a bit better and not kept giving them easy field position we would of got the win

Because it was so windy maybe the idea was to throw it up there and hopefully get a drop, but a lot were holding up in the wind.

They could just have kicked to corner but then people say why are we not trying a bomb? The bomb can work, but to me when they went up wind took them sideways a lot. Oh well, frustrating loss again.

Definitely team playing below par, yet still should of got a few more close wins this year.

Positive signs are when we do just to play better 80 min consistent footy especially with a few players back we will win more than we lose

Our outside backs are always lazy in defence.
If you don’t think DCE butchered the play 7 minutes out and cost us a win , you need to hit up specsavers mate.
It was the lowest % play of the day in the most important minute of the game when your up by 4, having just busted your guts to get into a dominant field position.
A Hail Mary if you will

Funny thing is remember all those games when we were behind on the scoreboard and DCE was grubbering the ball into touch on the last ?? LOL. Where was that yesterday ??

That errant kick really broke the teams spirit. The previous 12 minutes was all about heroic defence and repelling wave after wave. We finally get the ball and get field posession and all that was needed was a short kick or run it through the hands and make the Knights run 90 metres, instead we give them an extra tackle set and guess what? The score on that extra tackle, this is where DCE has just gotta get it right!!

Ha, you guys are too funny. One kick in 80mins footy cost us the game. Ok.

About as funny as your usual ! Poor DCE , he is out of form since 2016 and he needs, he needs, he needs.

I admire your loyalty and and in particular your BLIND faith. Almost every players on minimum contract , outperformed him yesterday.
Waddell, paseks, cust, keppie, maybe even croker

A combination of millions of things cost us a W yesterday.
2 poor instances from Cherry regarding his kicking game were definite contributing factors in large momentum swings against us.

Ha. I watched the replay. You can watch it on NRL.com. just watched the last 10 mins.

I personally thought the kick was on, was a little punt, caught the wind and just went to far. Funa almost caught it. We needed another try, those bombs can be perfect or disaster. I guess he could of grubbered into touch, but we had them on the back foot, was liking the way DCE was moving Newcastle left to right, he was playing good footy I am absolutely positive Tom plays and Manly wins. Garrick just couldn't take those half chances but Tom is so good a it.

If that kick lands 1/2 metre in field Funa smashes back in goal. I get what DCE was trying to do, just didn't execute.

But watch the next set of six. All Funa had to do was tackle their winger when he scrambled back on the 4th. They would of had to do a rushed 5th tackle kick on the 35m line, instead Ponga runs it and they score.

Anyway, some days things like the bomb come off, some they don't. On a whole it was another win we should of got bar some simple errors and penalties from a few players that in the end cost us the 2 points.
