Jason Taumalolo set to sign $10m deal: report

Plays of the Week
Jason Taumalolo is reportedly set to become the richest man in rugby league.

The Dally M medallist is on the verge of signing a 10-year contract worth $10 million with North Queensland, according to a News Corp Australia report.

The deal, which will see 24-year-old Taumalolo become a Cowboys players for life, dwarfs that of superstar teammate Johnathan Thurston who signed for $5 million four years ago.

An official announcement of Taumalolo's re-signing is expected as early as today

Jason Taumalolo is set to become the richest man in league.
"We are very hopeful of keeping Jason," Cowboys chairman Laurence Lancini told News Corp Australia.

"I don't really know if the NFL was a serious option, but we are doing everything to keep Jason at the Cowboys.

"He's very important to this club. He's not even 24 years old and he's playing outstanding football. His best years are ahead of him ... he's a powerhouse."

Asked if the Cowboys board had ratified a 10-year deal, Lancini said: "No comment."

Taumalolo travelled to Los Angeles in November for a NFL workout with scouts as he considered a permanent move to America.

He was offered an opportunity by three franchises, including Kansas City, to inspect their set-ups.

But that appears to be over now.

These guys are paid way too much for throwing a ball and smashing people down with their size.
You only have to have a barely functioning brain.
Anyway, morning rant over.
Go Manly!

Considering that Taumololo is a forward, I'd be questioning whether he'd even be able to play for 10 more years. DCEs deal was crazy but $1 million a year for 10 years for a forward is crazier. Having said that I'd love for him to be at Manly.

A million on half, Fullback or a excellent hooker, whilst big money, has a solid ROI potential as they a critical to a team structure.

10 Mill/10 Years on a forward is crazy. I know forwards have an important role, but as much as a half????

Are clubs offering these big money long term contracts more often to entice the player to stay ? 10 mil always looks better than say 3 mil even though the contract is longer . But in the modern game player contracts dont seem to mean too much or the new injury get out clause
A few years ago it was always considered a no go zone for contracts longer than 3 years

But who knows what performance conditions are in the contract, eg ability to perform at certain minimum levels, such that if not fit for first grade the wage is slashed?
Agree on the surface it looks mad, but without knowing the detail can't really say. He is an exceptional player.

like i said in the dce contract thread, this is the way the league is headed.. Always has been... Ppl say dce 1.2mil is crazy, my mate said to me in 07 we were absolutely nuts to sign snake on 600k as the top halfbacks (jt etc) were only on 500k tops... Within 4-5 years the average nrl player will be on 600k upwards while the stars are all closer to 2 million a year

The Cowboys should be more concerned with finding a quality halfback to take over after Thurston retires than signing a forward to a 10 year deal, even if he is as good as Taumalolo is.

These are the highest paid players in the competition:

Johnathan Thurston $1.2 million

Kieran Foran $1.2 million

Billy Slater $1.2 million

Cameron Smith $1.1 million

Daly Cherry-Evans $1.1 million

Greg Inglis $900,000

Robbie Farah $900,000

Sam Burgess $800,000

Cooper Cronk $800,000

Josh Dugan $800,000

It's a lot of money THIS YEAR. But in five years what will the cap be?
If the NRL approved snake and Skivvy retirement we could of paid him 1 million for this year.
But who would we drop off the bench?

Sign him long term before a chronic injury starts then if he has to retire from an injury insurance picks up the tab? Is that how it would work?

An influential fwd is as important as any player ala Sam Burgess in '14

I have no idea if that would work. Based on what we've seen with other players then if this were the case it could end up being a safe deal.

Agree with others that on the surface it looks silly but the terms could make a crazy deal look like a very smart deal in the future. I'd still have my reservations around performance (Nate Myles anyone) but Taumololo is an incredible athlete who might still perform at this level in 10 years.

Amazing amount of money, and whilst he is the most destructive forward in the world I think this is way over. The million per year whilst excessive, isn't my concern, it's like others have said its the length. He'll be 34 at the end of this contract, for a smashing forward that's a huge risk. At the end of the day he is a wrecking ball.

I don't like this move that seems to be happening to sign up players for long long periods. 3 years is about what I like to see, 10 years is an eternity.
