https://www.nrl.com/news/2018/03/19/nrl-unveils-new-immortals-and-hall-of-fame-programs/
“This year, we will induct an additional six players into a new NRL Hall of Fame.

“They will join the 100 Greats – named in our Centenary year ten years ago – who gain automatic induction into the NRL Hall of Fame as the Charter Class.

“We will also relaunch the Immortals, with up to two players being given the ultimate honour in our game, every four years.

Whether you agree with this course of action or not, and I do, I'm amazed that the league is actually being reasonably pro active.
I didn't expect anything other than one or all of the big four (jt) included.
I don't want to see 400 immortals but there is plenty of documented accounts of greatness since this game began and if anything it should enlighten those who think that the game began around the turn of the last century.
And in my opinion the wrong should be put right and Norm Provan, ahead of these blokes running around still, should be the next.
And he was before my time but I have read and heard enough about him to believe this.
And glad to see the hall of fame given a bigger profile.

Up to 2 is the key here - i think you will get 1 old (Provan) and 1 new together so the 2 headers up north are kept happy and the rest of the league are kept happy.

Agreed, I think it will be Provan and Mal.

I reckon everyone who plays NRL should be made an Immortal and have their own bust and statues made facing mecca.

And on the first Sunday of the footy season each year, at 3.00pm, all league fans should drop to their knees, where ever they are, and let out a mighty "hallelujah"

It should only be 1 or 2 immortals every 10 years. Inducting an immortal every 4 is too many. Allowing too many to be included reduces the value of the contribution to rugby league of those already inducted.
Having never witnessed Norm Provan's career, I will leave it to better judges than I to select the next Immortal.

The Immortals concept should be retired (with all respect to the current recipients) with the Hall of Fame being the ultimate celebration of the greatest Rugby League players. Having two tiers generates arguments over the higher one, and diminishes the value of the lower one.

I just think they would have been better just to make it one and make it hard, just not as hard as the Immortal criteria (whatever that is).

Don't remember any players other then Manly Pre 97. Was Mal really that good? Or is it because he was the QLD coach for all those years.

Manly players who made the list of 100 greatest named in 2007 - so automatic hall of famers

Boustead, Bull, Eadie, Fulton, Irvine, Lumsden, O'Neill.

Irvine and Fulton made the "Team Of The Century" named from the initial list of 100.

What other Manly players are hall of fame candidates ?? Beaver, Cliffy, Killer, O'Connell, Tooves ??

Mal was that good.

Only player to make 4 Kangaroo Tours (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994).
Only player to captain 2 Kangaroo Tours (1990, 1994).
301 club games (166 Canberra, 109 Brisbane Souths, 31 St Helens) - 1979-94.
5 premiership wins (3 Can [89, 90, 94] - all as captain, 2 BS [81, 85], 1 StH [84]).
39 games for Qld (32 Origin) - 1979-94.
46 tests for Australia - 1982-94.
24 tests as captain - 1990-94
World Cup winning captain in 1992.
Over 4 Kangaroo Tours played 19 out of a possible 21 tests including all 12 against Great Britain.
One of only 3 Australians along with Ken Irvine (1962, 1963) and Sam Backo (1988) to score a try in each test of an Ashes Series (1990).
Most Ashes Series as a player - 6 (1982, 1984, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1994) - the last 3 as captain.

Could play centre (main), wing and 2nd row and played tests in all 3 positions.

Big, fast, immensely strong and before he broke his arm twice had one of the best right hand fends you'd ever see.

Smell Mefinger is a moral to be one of them. I'd have him ahead of some of the current crop mentioned as candidates.

But didn't Mal say that rugby league has never done anything for him. I think it was around 1995?!
Yes he did. I’m not saying this is my choice, just what I think will be done.

They are re-working the rules as far as I understand, so it will be interesting whether they consider coaching and off field records or simply playing ability.
