How to help Tom in "Tough" top 4 games

I have been reading so many media outlets and watching the Fox footy shows ect, following tough losses against TOP 4 sides over the past 2 years and all opinions on how they shut Tom down - shut Manly down.
Talk is about how the opposition give an illusion of no space through the middle and push him wide, then converge.....which on theory is partially true, but not the catalyst for this situation.
I think first and foremost its about the opposition bashing us with the ball and creating "zero" attacking momentum, so by the time Tom T gets involved the defence is so well set, they can flood the area of the field Tom is set to attack.....really coming back to the "setup" of his involvement by working on a better, less predicatable go forward so the defence is not setting the terms and conditions.
The strangest part is my number 1 theory for not just the impact of Tommy T, but Manly winning more attacking space and time.....I flip the coin and call out the DEFENCE.....may seem a long shot but really feel this is where we need to lift.
Manly in these "TOP 4" games need to prioritise defence rather than thinking they cam "outscore" the better sides after beating Cowgirls or Dogs by 50 points the week before....
The line speed needs a Massive injection as does the control of tempo by slowing up that ruck, the gang tackles they copped from Storm, Souths and Penrith are in reflection, the blueprint they need to compare and inject more defensive numbers and have the opposition attack landing on their backs as more often than not are still standing or landing on fronts every tackle.
This leads to momentum and kicking on the front foot and owning the field position as a Manly side struggle 1 out from their 10m line and the calls of "Cmon Tom, do something" is a lost cause.
Tom T can and will destroy opposition with the right launching pad, but before even thinking or expecting Tom to rescue a side losing these other critical area's is a fairytail.
So in effect, the best way to help Tom, is to compete better defensively and earn better field position and mementum.....well that's my take...

Simple indeed. Just don't give up 28 or 40 points to the opposition.
Tom will make or finish at least one or two tries, so we just have to be better at controlling the other mob.

Simple: Speed up everything we do. Don't stand so flat in attack. Rush up as a line / machine in defense. All this comes down to attitude / effort / energy. But something that can't be done for 30 minutes, it needs to be sustained for 80+ every week.

As the commentators said, "there are so many hands on hips already, and it's only 10 minutes into the game".

Tom to mainly be in the middle, only go wide when Manly get rolling. A bit like how he was in origin at times.

Tom is our fullback. he plays behind the line mainly
his biggest asset is his ability to beat a man. his long stride, strength and fend allow him to slide in between defenders
compressed defence gives tom nothing to aim at. the best assistance tom could have is for someone to do the opposite and stretch the defence allowing tom to make the most of the gap from behind

we have players paid to stretch the defence but seem unable to put themselves in position to do so. if they did more work in the front line than we would be a more complete footy team with other options

Great post Maxta
Tom and any other fullback would find it hard to break a defensive line set and compressed
Once a team can dominate through the middle and get the defence back pedalling fullbacks or speedy backs will carve them up and when you have a player the calibre of Tom he will make them pay
Manly’s forwards need to dominate against all sides not just the the lesser teams when they can consistently do that that’s when you will see a different Manly

Fantastic post and some great analysis there!

I think that the recipe that the Storm unveiled last year was a pretty simple one. Shooting off the line and giving Tommy and our playmakers zero time. This was seen last week with Penrith. I would think that an easy fix to this is playing through the middle third through simple block plays and one out passing. Jurbo needs to take this responsibility and take a couple big men to the line with him and tip off to them. If opposing defences continue to rush out they will have more one on one tackles to make in the middle and at worse this will mean they become fatigued and shooting off the line won't be plausible. This then means that later in the game Tommy will one again have the time and space he thrives in.

What happened to the early spread to combat a compressed defence? We don't need to make line breaks off it, just need to keep the defence guessing and maybe get a quick PTB or 2. Sending our back 3 into the teeth of the defence over and over is a fools errand. We have the speed, why not play to our streghths?

Agree. But our structures need a big freshening up their Too.

As long as I can remember Man has been one out hit ups, from our boys being compressed.

We need width, with more than one option.

We are actually helping the defending team to compress, gang tackle and smash the living day lights out of us, by being compressed with the ball in the first place.

Like the old saying. Attack is the best form of defence.

Tom doesn’t get shut down, he just doesn’t get a chance to play when he is behind a powder puff pack...no coach has successfully come up with a strategy because there isn’t one. He will tear up when there is a platform, regardless of whatever tactic the media claim has been implemented by the genius coach of the week.

It doesn't help if the referees give the defensive sides a lot of latitude and IMO Penrith were jumping the gun in the second half and not getting penalized. Couple that with us being punished with 6 again calls and the contest is over. The six again rule is a blight on the game and the manner in which it is administered has a significant effect in the outcome of games.

Agreed , but give us 10 extra sets against the top teams and we will thrash them with Tom running riot .

Agree, the consistency and subjective nature of how the rule is applied is appalling. I felt the same in the riff game despite the praise of the "line speed".
Same as the ruck, easy to say get 3 in the tackle, apply some controlled wrestle to slow down, but reality is we would get pinged every single time which then defeats the purpose because we are gassed from the 6 agains. While the in this case the riff were allowed that extra latitude.
