I believe that the game has never been more a 17 man game, and teams with the best bench usually fare well in the contest .. Whether a prop starts or comes of the bench is no longer an indication of grade but more a recognition of game style and plan.
Marty plays for 40 mins and takes home $800k .. the cheese and young Harry share a spot at Melb and niether would go cheap .. WillyArmy Kickough spends half an hour on the bench and David Fifita on a million also sits down for a big part of games ..
Not for all the 4 on the bench ... But If a player has made a specialist niche coming off the bench, and has shown he is instrumental in the teams results ...I don't think it wipes off his value like it used to .. take Walker coming on in the middle .. can he be more useful and valuable than say a prop or lock starting ??
