How much is that bloke on the bench ??

And it is not just potentially taking less on the next contract. If he stays at Manly and plays off the bench, when it comes time to negotiate the subsequent contract there is a major risk that he is not going to be in as strong a position as he would be if he was a starting player elsewhere.

Several people have mentioned the value of a player being diminished if he comes off the bench ... is this still true in the 2020's

I believe that the game has never been more a 17 man game, and teams with the best bench usually fare well in the contest .. Whether a prop starts or comes of the bench is no longer an indication of grade but more a recognition of game style and plan.

Marty plays for 40 mins and takes home $800k .. the cheese and young Harry share a spot at Melb and niether would go cheap .. WillyArmy Kickough spends half an hour on the bench and David Fifita on a million also sits down for a big part of games ..

Not for all the 4 on the bench ... But If a player has made a specialist niche coming off the bench, and has shown he is instrumental in the teams results ...I don't think it wipes off his value like it used to .. take Walker coming on in the middle .. can he be more useful and valuable than say a prop or lock starting ??

Walker's value as an impact player off the bench should not be underestimated. He will also likely get better in theat role next season. Then there's the fact he provides utility cover for so many positions. I hope he stays.
Agree to an extent re he is a valuable player however just because he can cover many positions doesn't mean he covers them well! I wouldn't say him playing at fullback or 5/8 is anything to be that excited about. Good centre/middle though!

Clearly the game has evolved again.

All the top sides had a true impact 14 off the bench, none bar Harry Grant play a traditional 14 role, and even then the Cheese became the middle impact player after 20 mins.

Obviously a quality 14 as a strike middle is more important than ever.

Croker is living proof that a shovel at #9 is enough, if the strike is plentiful elsewhere.

Conner Watson will excel further again next year at the Roosters.....and I would personally pay more for Watson than either of the young Roosters halves.

That is all true, but where Walker would be taking a risk is that it would require clubs to change the way that they value the super-sub in terms of cap allocation. They may well do as the game continues to evolve, but I am not sure I’d be willing to take that risk.

I’d be flabbergasted if Dylan got $700k to be a super sub at the Tigers.

That’s huge money for a 40 minute per game player

Yeah .. my point is more general than specific to Walker ... I just think the value for some 40/50 min players is higher than we are traditionally used to .. Walker has shown he is a versatile player, converting quickly to a middle role, and will only get better for the runs ..

I think the role of at least one specific bench player at each club may end up being an actual "position" in the future .. different roles to suit different teams ... and the best of them will earn good coin ..

Marty is getting $800k for 40 mins ... David Fifita a cool million for 40 mins ... poor old Roy Bull would be shaking his head ...

Pretty sure I read that Marty's contract was structured so he received less during the preceding year or two, in order to help the club. It probably averages out more like 650 or 700k and he's given good value.
Yes I do realise that , nevertheless it’s still a heap of money isn’t it ??

In that case, we pay more for Marty than we do for Tommy.

Insane when you think about props values these days, how much is a 40 minute prop worth. A prop might get you the advantage in the first 20 minutes, but that can be lost in the ensuing 30-40 minutes until they come back on.

Haas on the other hand...

Yes this was my recommendation for a pinned post a couple of weeks ago.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CAN PEOPLE PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS????

Marty did manly a favour by structuring his deal over a few years so we could afford other players. We should be thanking him not grumbling about the reported 800k.

I doubt the Tigers will sign him to play on the bench. He is a bench player with our squad but he'd be a starting player with the Tigers squad and that's probably what is holding up contract talks...he can get more money and more minutes at the Tigers. However, he will be signing his death warrant going to Concord. He can win a premiership at Manly and repay the faith we've shown in him over the years.

Even at 700k he is stealing money from us...very disappointed with how his game has progressed. He needed to stand up and own the finals series but didn't.

Yes, but all the rhetoric is that DCE, Tom and Co’s effectiveness is diminished if the props don’t do their jobs.
A bit of chicken and egg at contract time.
