Forcing Des to start looking elsewhere in late 2010/through 2011, was one of the great ‘shooting ourselves in the foot’ moments in the club’s history.
With Des at the helm, there would have been greater certainty of a winning GF result in 2013. Tooves on the other hand (in that semi loss to Easts), presided over a tactically stupid approach, losing 4-0. Never taking the opportunity to kick easy penalty conversions, offered up by the Roosters. Win that game and have a week off - Manly probably wins the 2013 Grand Final.
As for 2012 and 2014, Des took the less capable (on paper) Canterbury teams to grand finals. Imagine what he could have done with the Sea Eagles’ teams in those years.
Not to mention the poisonous off-field atmosphere in the 2008/09 off season. The upshot of that season launch at Manly Wharf, ultimately cost the team the opportunity to go back to back in those years.
