Geoff Toovey the man to have Dragons breathing fire again

‘Tooves’ managed a winning record of 58% in his four-year coaching stint in the NRL, a lot better than the 48% of Paul McGregor.

Taking over in 2012, Toovey led the Sea Eagles to three consecutive top-four finishes, including a Grand Final berth in 2013. However, he was sacked by the club after finishing one win short of the top eight in 2015, one of the more shocking coach sackings in recent years.

While I love Tooves to death for what he has been\still is to this club, his footballing ability, desire and toughness, I think he is a "Manly coach". No doubt his hard-working character and competitiveness goes a long way but his trumps are all Manly heart and soul and I doubt players from other clubs would give him what is needed for themselves and him to succeed.

I could definitely be wrong, just a gut feel.

Toove's has that competitive aura about him....he is probably as good option as Illawarra could hope for.
Its easy to feel he is only Manly, because he has only ever been Manly since the 80's !!
This along with the fact he bleeds Maroon and White blood, but would still to a decent job anywhere imo.

Toovey is a very inspirational character that has earned that status by his heroic playing style .

Toovey inspired not only Manly wins but also NSW and Australian wins .

Toovey is a mans man and an Inspirational mans man as well .

Every one that has played the game and knows what the crux of toughness is would look up to Toovey

As far as pound for pound toughness goes

No one stands taller then Toovey

Illawarra has a really strong roster. On paper it's a top four squad. But there have been injuries and suspensions to several of their key players.
When a club has such issues - as we found out last season - the results suffer.
I think that with Widdop back Illawarra will cause a number of upsets and make the path to the finals that much more difficult for some current finals contenders.

We managed to put wins together with Turbo, Chez, etc missing. Storm put 38 points on the titans without 6 of their FG squad (yes, the titans suck).

I read an interesting piece by Gould today that said alot of the team are travelleing 3 hrs to training daily as they live north or south of illawarra which could be contributing to their burn out.

I don't think Tooves ever really excelled himself as a head coach, he did a good job maintaining success after Des but there was a decline in quality as his tenure went on. I don't want to cheer against him anyway.

Let Barrett coach the dragons, so I can get even more enjoyment out of them losing than I do right now.

Personally I thought Toovey did a very fine job as head coach. Was robbed of the Premiership in 2013 and very nearly won the Minor Premiership in 2014 with a no frills forward pack and some aging backline stars who were a little past their prime.

I reckon he gets judged too harshly for 2015’s results which he could be excused for given how crazy the injury toll was and how many ****fights were going on within the club.

Mind you our 2015 season still was much better than the Roosters’ 2016 season where they only won 6 matches (less than what Barrett won last year) and came
15th. The coach of that Roosters side has won 2 competitions and 4 Minor Premierships since 2013...

Explained everything perfectly.

I actually really enjoyed 2015 - after a horror start the team made an inspirational run at the back end of the season and nearly made the finals after Tooves was sacked.

And then there was the beautiful win over Cronulla in the final round with the great Horo intercept and Turbo try that ruined Cronulla chances.

To have his players play so hard for him after all the distractions of player movements, injuries and NRL witch hunts that was a great year - a hell of a lot better that the dull 2016-2018 years.
