FOX Show - Manly content

And just to get the blood boiling on here nice and early....

With the Super league war would Manly have been better jumping ship? We were gold plated back then and had we jumped the ARL would have lost the war but we were in such a position that we could have demanded a huge deal to jump.
There would have been no northern eagles. No barren rebuilding and i would hazard a guess no greenturd type trying to move us out of Sydney.....
Crystal ball stuff. Though I do recall in their big vision they considered only 4 sydney teams - north, south, east, west.

The whole thing was imagineered by execs carving up a big pie with no mind to tradition or legacy.

As a player O'Conner was the complete package and had under rated pace....up with the quickest and arguably the best step for a centre along with Sludge Rogers.
Did lose me with his antics along with Ribot and among those who really to this day stand honourable among all that greed, was Arko - that bloke is a True Manly legend.
Thing is I look back to 1987 for those who are not so old and O'Conner was just a freakish match winner and like the Foz, Choc departures still appreciate what they bought to the field for Manly in the heat of battle.....just lost respect on a personal level.

The ARL waved the white flag just as they were starting to win, and the terms of the “peace deal” were definitely a win for SL. Classic **** RL administration.

What you say is correct. I couldn't bring myself to watch much super league as the product was horrible. I remember a game between Penrith and Bulldogs and it was 18-18 after about fifteen minutes or so - touch footy!

While the ARL was in a position of strength at the time, News Corp's resources would have outlasted them eventually.

The biggest mistake Arko made was bringing the Broncos into the comp - Frankenstein's monster. Should have just kept Qld as a backwater as long as possible and kept cherry-picking their talent, or sent Bozo up there as CEO to keep the yokels in line!

Biggest mistake by Arko/Quayle was not lodging brand copyright of the Clubs and not including a non-compete clause into player contracts :banghead:

Thats all Ribot did was register the Clubs logos and names and then presented the ARL with breaching his rights 😎

Such a simple takeover that could have been so easily avoided all the way from 1908 to 1995 😡

A lot of people did a lot of regrettable things to the game back then.
Mostly news limited.
Snoz was a small player in the whole scheme of things.
He would've been manipulated.
I'd prefer to remember his exploits with us as a player.
St George didn't lose players they wanted to keep back then but he came to us.
Anyway that fight is behind us.
We got to fight what's in front of us and that's a bald, slimey, green turd, every bit as evil as anything super league could come up with...

Just watched the show.

It was great seeing Marty run down Gagai in the aust v nz juniors game, and for Marty to admit he deliberately got a penalty to get his team time to get back on side.

I do notice in footage of the old games, just how obvious the passes going backwards were.

We all know the ball can drift forward after passing it (damn you physics!) but it's nostalgic to see just how natural it seemed for those guys to heave the pigskin backwards to a player definitely behind the ball carrier.

Two of the best bits were re O'connor firstly why he decided to jump to league. Masters said there was an end of year trip to Hawaii and I hadn't been there so I thought sure... let's do it.

And the other were the graphics on the old match footage.
O'connor - age 27
Occupation - sales manager.

Yes players used to have real jobs as well.....

Skill level = Extreme
Loyalty = see Titanic

PS. Was severely bashed by Meninga's and his arm guard and nothing happened.

Super League actually wanted Manly back in the day. Their original "vision" for Sydney was four teams representing the four points of the compass and to that end did not want North Sydney. For all of his faults, John Ribot being an ex-Manly player himself and knowing the score north of the Harbour, wanted Manly in that competition.

The one thing that Murdoch's millions couldn't buy though was Manly's loyalty. Not a loyalty to the ARL itself.....but our loyalty to Arko and Bozo which meant the ARL by association.

Did we do the right thing by sticking with the ARL? Maybe, maybe not. But we did and the rest is just a discussion point.

Not the case at all. :shake:

It was Packer's threat to sue the ARL and it's Clubs if they stopped supplying content for his new venture with Optus 😎

That is why those that took his threat for what it was, all ended up with no monies and even folded 😡
(Lots on this from Arko if you google it
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_League_war)

Murdoch (Foxtel) v Packer (Optus) tore the game apart and Clubs had to choose between them to try and survive 🙁

Then Packer sold out of Optus and we ended up under Murdoch's control till News Ltd finally reduced their footprint in Oz @

What I have never understood is why Manly came out of the fight broke and busted (no cash) - leading to the NE debacle - while other clubs on both sides of the divide all seemed OK. Were Manly club funds used for the war without any obligation for repayment by the ARL? I know Bozo was in the thick of it with Arko, but so was Phil Gould (who I think was Easts at that time) and others.

Manly had just had a run of 3 GFs in a row, and then pretty much collapsed.

Stanton knows where he directed the Manly money.

We threw stupid money at our young stars/players. 😎

Bozo/Arko were caught between Packer's threat and trying to retain control of the ARL @

Dont get me wrong I'm glad we held firm. If we had have jumped it would have been night night for the ARL.

Would we be more of a powerhouse if we went? I think perhaps.... but who really knows....
I think yes.

Frank Stanton knew as early as 1995 that we might have to merge with Norths. He told me so in passing in the then new Ken Arthurson (ironic in this piece) Stand that year.

He later worked with the Cowboys and the Storm, which might indicate he could see the benefits of switching to Superleague, but was encumbered by Arthurson’s (in particular) influence on the club.

Stanton was a canny operator, he registered a series of alternate names so that Superleague couldn’t come in and operate a club on the northside in opposition to Manly. Names like East Coast Sea Eagles, Sydney Sea Eagles etc.
