Finally!

First Grader
It was so good to watch my first game of rugby league for the year tonight. Our code really is the greatest game of all. Such a pity the people running the game have somehow managed to conclude, that we only deserve three games a year, maybe four, as the refs tend to put the whistle away for the GF as well (unless it’s Manly v Roosters) What I am unable to comprehend, is why people involved in the game don’t make more noise about how these fools have destroyed football. Tonight was a great watch because the two teams were allowed to play and determine the end result. Yes there was a couple of questionable calls, but there is no doubting the better side won. Oh well... it’s back to the thirty penalties a game, square ups, sin bins and everything else again this weekend. How do the people running the game even have a job, and I mean ANY lower level job, let alone hold positions such as CEO.

Kev, you're as bad as me mate. You in Perth? Get some sleep hahaha.

You nailed it my good mate.

When Tommy scored, I was up and screaming. I was so happy.

Can't wait to see some tough, motivated, flowing footy from Manly again one day, to rekindle that amazing feeling I used to get watching us.

I can almost predict with certainty now about 3-4 plays before it's blown, when the refs will penalise us or send a player off. Same ****, week in, week out.

Penalty after penalty. Million players in the bin. It's ordinary. And as biased as I am, I think our club is an easy target for the refs, because if we are penalised out of the game, no-one cares, and there isn't a furore made about it.

Sucks. Hate Todd Greenberg.

Haha I’m a bit of a night owl at times mate. Good to see you happy champ.

I’m seeing a lot of noise being made mate. Harrigan’s almighty spray and the commentators really honed in on it after the game. It seems everyone is outraged and pointing to the SOO as the way to officiate games, put the whistle away. Just a few select numbskulls don’t get it, and they are the ones running the game.

I was surprised at how well the match was refereed. At last a current ref had a 'feel' for the match and the importance of letting play continue and giving the players a chance to settle disputes (within reason) themselves.
Congratulations to the ref. May this standard continue.

I missed that... very pleased to hear it’s happening.

Even though there were only 5 penalties given last night, the game still felt like it was being refereed & monitored.
Not like some Origins in previous years where they’ve put the whistle away & it’s turned into a free for all, with the Ref there to add to the ambiance.
Maybe this is a cultural shift with the players changing their behaviour, knowing they’ll get nicked after being bombarded for weeks in clubland?

And now, you do what they told ya...

Qld were offside most of the night. In a club game, it would have been a penalty a thon. The refs just buckled under the pressure not to **** up the showpiece.
What a sorry state of affairs... Greenberg has been awfully quiet. Surely after such a successful night for the game, what with the windfall they received from Tourism Victoria as well as the 90 thousand tickets they sold, the CEO has got to say something. Any other code and the boss would be yelling from the rooftops..: but Todd remains silent. Gee, I wonder why.

To be fair though, those who liked the way last night's game was refereed were mostly NSW supporters. Not surprisingly after they lost, Qld fans on social media are having a right royal bitch about things, not the least being Tommy's try which they claim was a clear cut double movement because Munster falling and his arm being on Tom's leg was the most obvious tackle ever. Then there was the no call on Maloney's forward pass for Addo-Carr's try and last night's game was clearly just a way for NSW to win.....i.e. it was rigged so that Qld would lose.

If Manly are offside on Saturday as much as Qld were last night.....we'll be slaughtered on both the penalty count AND scoreboard because you know they are going to call them this weekend after last night.

Outside of the Grand Final, State of Origin has always been the showpiece for the NSWRL / ARL / NRL. Even the Super League had their own version in their one season here. The games have higher television ratings than any other game other than the GF, especially in non rugby league states like SA and WA. It would not do well for the refs to be blowing 30-40 penalties in the game like we've seen in NRL club games. They want to showcase rugby league football at its physical, open, fast paced best and you can bet that the refs were, are and always will be under strict instructions to let the games flow as much as possible.

Seriously, just take a look at how long it took for a player to be sent off in an Origin game. Game 2 in 1996..... that was the 46th game played. And its not like there weren't send-off offences committed before that. Les Boyd's elbow to Darryl Brohman in 1983, Steve Roach decking Bob Lindner behind the play in 1988, just to name two and there were numerous more like Meninga's high tackle on Snoz in 1991 that broke his nose and gave him two black eyes. In club games they'd have been telling their stories walking, but in Origin (well, the games themselves, we all know what happened to Boyd after), they got away with it. Boyd was only penalised while Roach didn't even get a warning from Mick Stone. And because of the ARL's reluctance to punish Meninga since they wanted him as Aussie captain rather than Wally Lewis, Snoz had to accept nothing more than an apology.

Origin has always been different. But I bet you come Finals time this year.....the whistles won't be heard half as much as they are now.

Sounds good to me!

My "finally" is this ....

After about 6 years of refusing to cheer for a NSW team full of girl friend bashing, drunken sex harrasers, junior football ref abusing tattooed morons ... playing a team of obnoxious pricks ..... Finally I had the pleasure of watching two teams made up mostly by good blokes having a dig .....

edit .... and a special mention to not have to watch or listen to "look at me, look at me" bloody Farah!!

You're not a queenslander are you? Why would they ever rig state of origin in NSW favour? Qld winning is the only thing keeping the thing alive. And what about qld being offside the entire night? Or did they magically produce the most blistering line speed in the history of the game?

Don't be calling me a Queenslander lol I'm a South Aussie.

I was just trying to say how those hillbillies would think. They win, all good. They lose, its some sort of conspiracy.

You must have crystal balled the Rabbits V Titans game! How can one organisation present 2 entirely different versions of the same game in 48 hours? Issues we let go for Origin that keep momentum in a game are pulled up ad nauseum in a club match 2 days later. These clowns continue to push fans to find something else to do instead of watching football with their ham-fisted approach to OUR game!

Well that didn't last long.

Reffing in the soufss game was poor. I dont care about the titans, but they had alot of calls go against them. Some were clear mistakes.

Calling the referees performance poor is very gracious of you. I watched the game, and came to the assumption that someone in Atkins family must have placed a significant amount of cash on a Rabbits win.

That was blatant cheating. Miss Frizelle shouldve stumped up the 10k and let old mate coach go for it.
