Eels forward Kenny Edwards facing nine-month ban after submitting urine sample on behalf of teammate Kaysa Pritchard
  • by: EXCLUSIVE DEAN RITCHIE..
A STAR Parramatta player is facing a nine-month ban from rugby league after impersonating an Eels teammate during a pre-season drug test.

Eels forward Kenny Edwards will be rubbed out for the rest this season after submitting a urine sample on behalf of teammate Kaysa Pritchard during a test on February 24.

The deception was uncovered when NRL drug testers attempted to confirm the test was on Pritchard before being informed by Parramatta officials that Edwards had in fact supplied the sample.

Parramatta officials immediately informed the NRL integrity unit, who are preparing to impose Edwards’ hefty punishment in coming weeks.

The matter is viewed extremely seriously and The Daily Telegraph can reveal the NRL recommendation is for Edwards to be banned until November.

It is understood Pritchard, a 21-year-old hooker, will only face a reprimand because it was an out-of-season test not administered by ASADA. The tests were for illicit drugs, not performance enhancing.

Parramatta head of communications Josh Drayton confirmed on Wednesday night that the incident occurred.

“Both players are remorseful regarding the incident and have provided their full co-operation during the investigation period,” Drayton said.

“The club notified the NRL after it was bought to its attention and we are pleased with the way the integrity unit has handled the matter.

“While the club does not condone this behaviour, we strongly believe in looking after the welfare of our players and we will continue to provide them with assistance over the coming months.”

Drug testers had chosen Pritchard for a random test before he asked Edwards to falsely step forward and give his name as Pritchard.

The cover-up was exposed when the drug testers — while speaking to a Parramatta official — pointed to Edwards, claiming they had just tested Pritchard.

It was at that moment Parramatta officials realised there Edwards had lied about his identity.

Edwards confirmed at that point that he had deliberately deceived the drug testers. The club immediately told the NRL.

One insider said: “Kenny knew he had done the wrong thing. There are no excuses though. Parramatta want to stand by Kenny.”

Edwards, a 25-year-old back-rower, is currently out with a knee injury, Pritchard also missing with a pectoral injury. They haven’t played all season.

The NRL and Parramatta continue to exchange dialogue on the official punishment for Edwards.

Eels and NRL officials have been discussing the matter for three months with the tests run by the NRL, not ASADA.

Edwards has a family and Parramatta are keen to keep the back-rower in a positive frame of mind. The Eels also want the ability to rehabilitate Edwards and not allow him to be thrown onto the scrap heap.

Parramatta have discussed trying to have Edwards back on the field for the final three games this year with NSW Cup feeder club Wentworthville.

Had Pritchard failed to take a drug test run by ASADA, he would have been banned for two years. Edwards was not commenting last night.

Parramatta have denied covering up the story, saying the club would have announced Edwards’ suspension once the matter was finalised by the NRL.

Thank god we let this bloke go as he has always been an idiot. Claytons punishment as he is out for the season with a knee injury anyway. Should be banned for two years minimum

How does Pritchard escape punishment?

He dodged the test and gets nothing? If you're clean, you take the test.

I'm stunned!

Sounds like a loop hole get a injured team mate to take the test he get's 9 months for being stupid and you can hide whatever if ever you were taking.

9 months is a bit harsh when the Sharks who had systematic cheating going on got what - three weeks?

If it was an asada test prichard avoided then he would be treated as if he was guilty under their rules.
