Eels ban more misbehaving fans

PARRAMATTA have launched a crackdown on crowd misbehaviour in the wake of last month's Petero Civoniceva racism row, slapping bans and warnings on half a dozen of their fans.
The club has joined forces with Parramatta Stadium, ticketing agency Ticketek and the NSW police to implement a "watch list" of troublemakers, and signalled its intent by warning or cancelling the tickets of consistently drunk or abusive fans.
At least one season ticket holder has had their pass voided for the remainder of the 2008 season and all of next year.
"We learnt an important lesson out of the Petero Civoniceva incident and were determined to do everything in our power to make sure the misbehaviour of a few does not ruin things for the vast majority of fans," Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald said.
"We've identified a number of people who are known for unacceptable behaviour and in some cases we have banned them for extended periods.
"The message is clear - if you misbehave, you will be caught and action will be taken."
Security guards identified one spectator who consistently got so drunk at games he fell asleep in his seat.
Fitzgerald also applauded the efforts of fans who had come forward to identify troublemakers.
"I've often said we have the best fans in the league and through their actions they continue to prove it," he said.
"We want our home games to be a place people are comfortable coming to and I believe we're very close to ensuring that."
Last month, a spectator who racially abused Penrith captain Civoniceva was hit with a five-year ban from all rugby league games.
The fan, who was identified using television footage, taunted the respected Fijian-born Test prop by aiming monkey chants at him.
The Eels take on the Wests Tigers at Parramatta Stadium on Monday night.
