Don't write us off: Toovey
Andrew Bryan NRL.com Wed, Dec 21, 2011

The reigning NRL premiers have endured a very public transformation in the offseason, but the message coming from the Sea Eagles is clear: write us off at your own peril.
With the much publicised move of dual premiership-winning coach Des Hasler to the Bulldogs, taking with him a contingent of backroom staff, it has been a less than ideal preparation for a title defense. But newly appointed coach Geoff Toovey maintains that the status quo at the Northern Beaches will remain the same.
There is no denying that Hasler is a tough act to follow.
Under his reign, Manly was transformed into one of the most dominant teams of the modern era. The Sea Eagles appeared in three of the last five grand finals – winning two of them. And when they didn’t make rugby league's grandest stage, they were knocked out by the eventual premiers.
It’s quite a legacy, one that Toovey is hoping to carve out for himself.
“It is a great opportunity for me and a great honour,” Toovey told NRL.com.
“Legends of the past have coached the Manly side and hopefully I can do the club justice and hold my head high.
“It is an exciting time and I’m looking forward to it.”
There is no doubting that Toovey is his own man and will bring his own style to the silvertails coaching job. A super tough competitor in his playing days, including 286 matches for the Sea Eagles, Toovey has been in and around the Warringah system for decades and declared not much would change in the near future.
Toovey’s message is simple: Manly are still the same team, they will still strive for consistency and they will still take some beating in 2012.
“It is something that has happened very quickly here,” he said.
“The head coach and some of the staff left pretty quickly, so we have just been trying to maintain the status quo. We were the most successful team last year winning the premiership and we aren’t going to change much from last year.
“Of course I will put my own stamp on the team, but it may take a while. Obviously it has all happened very quickly and I will take my time about putting my own twists and turns on things, but it has been a successful side and we don’t have to change too much to remain successful.
“We have a great squad, a great set of individuals, there are a few changes from last year, but not that many. I think you can expect the same level of consistency as you saw last year.”
Toovey will start his tenure at the helm of the Sea Eagles under a baptism of fire. Refurbishments at Brookvale Oval have forced Manly to play their first five games of the season on the road.
The premiers open their campaign with a grand final rematch against the Warriors in New Zealand, before facing a short turnaround against the Wests Tigers in Gosford.
It’s a daunting challenge for any coach, let alone one who has been thrust into the top job with a new support staff, but Toovey is not shying away from the task at hand.
He believes his side will rise to the challenge.
“Expectations from us and our fans is to have a good start to the year,” he said.
“It is a tough start for us with the schedule we have, but we remain confident that we do well.
“There are a lot of away games there, but we are confident that we can get a pretty strong foothold in the competition ladder and we are looking forward to being there at semi-final time.
“As the Warriors showed this year, once you make the finals anyone can get to the grand final, it is just a matter of making it there in the business time of year.”

I wouldn't be surprised if we drop a few of those first 5 games with them all being away from home and after having the WCC.

Dean Ritchie will go bananas if we do, but if it does happen I think that is probably the time to put some cash down on the boys to win the comp rather than write us off...

I might be one of the few that don't mind the clean out at the club. Loved des and crusher etc and thank them for their contribution to our recent success.

However it has been amazing seeing the turn-around since then, appointment of my favourites in 2V and cliffy, the efforts of the marketing team and players in promotions and membership. I have now as much excitement and expectation leading into this season as I have over the last five years if not more, my commitment to the sea eagles has not wavered as has my belief in our plans to go B2B.

Write the mighty manly club off, hate them, envy them! I will love the sea eagles that much more!

I think some of the media might be guilty of writing us off! But none of the other players from other teams will write us off... They know that on our day we are hard to beat and have a very tough pack!! I doubt u will hear any player come out and say 'manly are gone'! Or soft.. There is nothing soft about this manly pack! Ask the broncos and the warriors!!

It is now a new era for the Sea Eagles, being an ongoing regeneration and consolidation of the whole club.It has already appears to have become more harmonious, innovative and flexible. Overall, it is now a happier place to be , including fans who are still passionately attached to it all. Unity is strength.

Its time to publicly acknowledge Dave Perry.

Making the changes that re-establishes Manly as the benchmark for RL Clubs.

So keep up the great work Daz :)

Great to see the whole Manly Warringah footy organisation lift a level since the coaching staff departures. I'm very excited about next season & will be going to as many home & away games as possible to support the boys. B2B baby!!!

Tunks & Hughes on Talkin Sport were 2 who totally wrote us off, especially Tunks. He said we were no chance and actually laughed when someone suggested Manly might win again. Those 2 have obvious Dog affiliations so no surprise there. One slight surprise was I heard Paul Kent say he wanted Manly have a good year because of what we went through after the GF win. Must be guilt.

Paul Kent said that on the Backpage as he feels that 2v was left to deal with Desgate on his own.
Good to see 2v has everyone's respect.

They wrote us off last year and we won the comp. They can keep writing and we will keep winning .

We are no longer flying under the radar!

I was just about to write that! I don't know why anyone would write us off Tooves will be a great coach and the team has had a few losses but it's still a great team with another year and a premiership under the belt of the halves and T Rex hitting his straps. I hope Cliff works with Tony as well, he's got a magic inside ball and the way he frightens defences it will work brilliantly with Brett running off him. I can't wait for next year!

No. Nothing will ever surpass smashing the salary cap rorting Scum 40 zip. If Manly didn't win another game as long as I lived, I would die a happy man. Best day of my life!

1978 and 2008 and 2012 will be a fitting trifecta to the team spirit at Manly.

Being stripped of almost all the first grade coaching/fitness Staff for 2012, will mean that the Players need to take on aspects of these roles. A GF would be a fitting validation of the Manly Winning culture

We are so blessed to have had the good judgement to be Manly Supporters :)
