Defence is part structure and resetting your line quickly in the modern game, after making good hard contact to halt momentum and have 3 players in the tackle to dominate and control....attempting to minimise the roll in the ruck which leads to jagged edge defence and overlaps.
By slowing that middle third, defence has time to reset and actually shoot off the line and when needed, slide, as the time is there to do so after controlling the ruck.
Manly dont seem to do this anywhere near good as their opposition or other games across the weekend
It's no secret defence is often used as a guideline to a teams intent, desire and attitude and leaking big scores every werk shows a lack of all the key elements of a winning footy team
Just a small potential help and by no means a saviour, a genuine fullback can help immensely by directing from the back and organising the defensive line from the best seat in the house, with Walker this is NOT happening....not his fault along with being well out if position.
Need to have a genuine fullback in Tom's absence....is the Blacktown fullback an option ??

I just cannot fathom how fundamentally poor our ball handling is. Simple handling errors too - we’re not dropping ball under pressure.

I can’t cop handling errors around dummy half (Croker) or players not being able to hold on to a decent pass with the defensively line not in their face (Gosiewski).

Totally agree and really Gosiewski shouldn't be playing, hand and arm injuries make catching (and tackling), very difficult

Our defence is diabolical. I don't know how Des can say the middle defended well either. No aggression. No numbers in the tackle to slow the play the ball down. No forcing them back. No line speed. No intent.

edit: No pressure on the kickers. Lazy marker defence.

Contrast that with the Bunnies last night. They don't wrestle, they just tackle hard. Manly used to be like that.
