Could the Bears be back?

Watching the local news last night and it seems the Bears consortium is by far and away the front runners to take over the Titans.

They'd become the Gold Coast Bears.

And they'd play in their original colours as well.

And just when I thought we'd got rid of those pricks almost 20 years ago.

You have to give Greg Florimo 10/10 though he's never stopped trying.

As a league traditionalist, I was sad to see the demise of the likes of the bears and if they can take over the Gold coke, good luck to them. It would be nice for old times sake if they played a few games a year at Bear Park for their fans. I miss the local derby with them, cause it was always a tough game which 2 in 3 times Manly would win.

Good lord .. the poor people of South Queensland might as well place their heads between their legs and kiss their hopes goodbye. May as well rename the club the "TITAN..ICS"

PSS I hope this doesn't mean that old Norths fans like @Ryan will be leaving us to join a Titans forum .. who would I argue with ..

When the NRL cut the Bears, Jets, Magpies, Tigers, Steelers etc, they really devastated and alienated so many fans in the name of progress. I think they missed a trick, unlike the AFL who had to move the Swans to Sydney and the Lions to Brisbane. What has worked with these moves is that Sydney and Brisbane still play at least 6 times a year in Melbourne and their Melbourne based fans can see them play, it's something at least and the traditions of these clubs, ie club songs, colours have been retained. I feel so sorry for the fans of the clubs that lost their clubs and were forced into mergers that the majority of us hated. I don't think for me personally there was a more miserable time that the era of 2000-2002 when we had that inflicted on us. If the NRL are smart they will allow the Bears to be based on the Gold Coast, also merge them with the Burleigh Bears and run a team out of Robina which is a first class stadium. If we get a future expansion of the game, then the likes of the Newtown Jets should be included in some sort of arrangement so their culture is kept alive too. We have just had retro round and what should have been by far the biggest round for pulling in crowds didn't hit the mark. People like me respect the tradition of the game and it's time the NRL got off its ass and for this round especially made the kick off times friendly for all fans who want to attend games, playing Saints v Souths at 6 PM is a brainless decision, who ever came up with the idea of that time slot which the fans all year have hated, should not be in any decision making capacity moving forward.

Remember there is a 14 day cooling off period, should they choose to backflip!!

Just more Bears propaganda that never really goes away, like the Bill Murray character in 'What About Bob'....

They never lead with the news about their intent to re-join. They're only in the news cycle once something hits the airwaves about expansion or club re-distribution or NRL licences.

I once had sympathy for their cause. But like all hijacked causes run by fanatics, it soon becomes tedious hearing the constant chants of victimhood (Manly kicked us out), cherry-picked and misleading data (300000 support us) and talked up interest (we signed up 20 kids at the St.Ives Maccas last Saturday) that doesn't match reality of their situation.

If they were fair dinkum I would expect them to drop the Central Coast pipedream, stop being a parasite ready to attach themselves to any currently struggling club, walk away from any idea of having a SE Qld presence under a new licence, and instead make the case for being a new Adelaide or Perth club. Do the groundwork there now and generate the interest that can see them emerge in a new region.

So far their success in getting back into the NRL reflects their premiership successes since the '30s. A sympathetic vet would have put them down a long time ago.

I don't really know how much longer the NRL can support a Gold Coast side.

The Suns ( AFL) are in trouble as well and have just sacked their coach.

I just don't think the demographics there support a team, 90% ( yes a guess) of their fans actually support another side but attend just cause they love the game.

I sat next to a family once in the Manly away section, and the guy ( dressed in Manly gear) showed me his Titans membership and said he gave up his 4 seats on half way to be with the MWTS for the game.

He told me most fans up there are the same.

If they went with say the Burleigh Bears they might actually get more fair dinkum locals , not all the ring ins.

Yeah, most games seem to contain more "away" fans. Will probably only change in 10/15 years as the younger locals grow up.

Yes the tide ( if they are prepared to keep funding it) will turn.

Of course if they moved the licence to say , Ipswich , and played out of Suncorp as the second Brisbane side they'd go gangbusters.

But we know Donkey Kong will never allow that , they'd destroy them like they did the Crushers.

I lost any respect / sympathy for the Bears when they began to blame Manly for their demise! If they make it back fine, if not I don't give a s$%t........

I can see the funny side of the Bitter Bears coming back into the comp and struggling along as also rans once again just like they did for another 70 years or so.

Let em back in - be good for a laugh !!!

The Titans are just about the longest running professional sports franchise that has been on the Gold Coast. Well, those in a national competition at least. The NBL teams (Cougars/Rollers, Blaze) all failed. The AFL's Bears eventually moved to Brisbane (considering they were the Brisbane Bears it was strange that they were ever based at Carrara) while the Giants/Seagulls/Chargers only lasted about a decade. And the Suns are basically being propped up by the AFL because they don't want all the work they have done in the region to go to waste (unlike the NRL who let the Western Reds and Adelaide Rams die in the name of starting a team in Melbourne plus the understandable reluctance to cut any Sydney teams).

Then there was the GC United A-League team which only lasted 3 years.

The Gold Coast is a national sports team graveyard mostly because of the population which seems to have more relocated retirees than born and bred locals.

I think they missed a trick, unlike the AFL who had to move the Swans to Sydney and the Lions to Brisbane.

The AFL also got it right in maintaining the red and white of South Melbourne, having 'SMFC' emblazoned on the back of the shirt to maintain that historical link, and looking after the traditional Melbourne based fans, Paul Roos famous remark after a GF win, "this is for the bloods".

Instead the NRL consigned almost 100 years of history to Tempe Tip (if that still exists as well)

It depends on whether Darryl Kelly can keep his consortium together. He nearly walked away after they were smashed by the donkey's. The Bears are keen but I expect that the NRL will prefer to keep the Titans brand alive. If the Titans keep getting smashed anything could happen.
