Snake

Snake's Alive!
After the Raiders game I thought about our attack and how we struggled to score points in the first half even though we had a decent amount of ball. Then I thought about how the Jake T try was a bit of luck with the kick deflection and of course the individual brilliance of Walker gave us another try. I was still a little concerned about our attack at this point even though I was wrapped in the win.

So I looked at our for and against and noticed that outside of the Dragons, we had scored more points than any other side. I figured we must be doing something right but what it was, I couldn't put my finger on. I thought maybe it was just the freakish talents of Walker and Tom T.

Then last night happened.

It seems to me that our second phase play is killing the opposition and giving our halves time to feed the backs off quality ball. This is also where Api comes into the equation. He is very good at capitalising on these offloads and feeding the halves or Tom T off the back of them. Our pack is creating time and space for the backs and there is enough quality in the backline to take these opportunities.

We are not a side with a methodical structure in the vein on Melbourne, Cronulla, or Saints. We play like the Broncos and a little like Penrith last year. The method is simple. Push up in numbers around the forward platform and then get the ball as quickly to the backs as possible and the space is there for an opportunity to score points. It's working.

Good point Snake . The positive of not being a methodical attacking team is that it makes us hard to defend against
The dogs are too methodical . Hasler has them playing like robots .

Last night I also saw some nice shifts in the backline. There was one with Uate scoring a try on the right and another with Jorge finishing off on the left. Our pack is creating those opportunities up front but it's nice to see our backline show off like that from time to time.

The thing with the second phase play is how quickly it unfolds. We have so much speed with DCE, Walker, Kelly then Tom and Uate out back. DCE's burst especially accelerates the whole thing. He's so quick off the mark that it catches the defence flat footed.

Yeah he got Reynolds interested very early for the Taufua try.

Like i said before, to me Marty is almost our most important player. All the go forward and second phase play starts with him. Opposition just cannot put him on his back and wrap up his huge arms. He is the reason we are rolling forward and every off load gets us another 25 to 20m and scatters the defense

I think what is different from the last 2 seasons is the team seems to be fitter. When Manly played fast last night Souths were left floundering. Tom T attracts 2 defenders each time he injects himself into the play and its opening up opportunities. I think the main reason is the strong go forward we are getting from Marty and Co. It is a hell of an improvement that we are seeing.

My favourite try last night was when the halves passed back across the ruck, wrong footing their forwards for turbo to run right through the hole it opened up. But the geniuses who cut the nrl highlights vid have cut all that out, just showing the end of the play.

I think my favourite try of the game was the one where Kelly made the bust, drew the fullback and put Jorge over in the corner. The leadup to that had Cherry wrapping around to team up with Green and then Kelly was away. Was great to see a halfback and a five-eighth operating on the same side of the field. Don't see it much in the NRL these days.

Some of the tries scored this year are first class, clean breaks from a fair way out , expertly finished. A full speed clean break just wide of the ruck is so effective because the defence is flat out trying to catch you and you have option to pass inside or out.
Spot on .

i liked the first try, after b.j. fends reynoylds off to score, reynolds turns away to look for someone to blame & on the last replay shown another souffs player approaches him and gives him one hell of a blast!
