Standing down ... NSW Premier Bob Carr is reportedly quitting.

NEW South Wales Premier Bob Carr is standing down today after 10 years in the job, a decade in which he hosted the Olympics in Australia.
Mr Carr, the son of a Sydney rail worker and a former journalist, will announce his resignation this morning.

NSW Police Minister Carl Scully and Health Minister Morris Iemma are understood to be the current leadership contenders.

Mr Carr's resignation was first revealed by Sydney's Daily Telegraph on its website.

His greatest achievement was the 2000 staging of the Olympics in Sydney, described by then International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch as the "best Olympic Games ever".
