The reason why they chased Wood so hard for so long was his attitude & deceit.

The cops who led the case judged his attitude to be a signal of disdain for the investigation team and that he was above the law. They didnt like that at all.

It sounds like the investigation was pushed by someone in government who thought that it would make a good news story for the police if they could convict him.
