There is absolutely no excuse to abuse or assault women ... but to ban Eagle Rock

Classic song 'Eagle Rock' to be BANNED at an Australian university - after complaints male students 'surround women and drop their pants' whenever the track is played

  • An Australian National University dorm may ban Daddy Cool song 'Eagle Rock'
  • Student Emily Jones claims the song is part of an offensive ANU 'tradition'
  • When the song is played, male students circle females and drop their pants
  • Ms Jones said she tried to get out of the circle but claims the men 'trapped' her
  • Burton and Garran Hall could ban 'Eagle Rock' from all future events
  • Under a new policy, a warning bell would be sounded before the song is played

A university dorm is looking to ban the song 'Eagle Rock' from events after a student complained her male peers circled women and dropped their pants when the tune was played.

Emily Jones, a student at Australian National University in Canberra, said she was dancing to the Daddy Cool song with a friend at a Burton and Garran Hall mixer last year when a group of male students approached them.

'Several male peers circled us and linked arms with one another – effectively trapping us, and other women, in their circle,' she wrote afterwards in an article in the student newspaper, Woroni.

'These men then dropped their pants to their ankles, and many watched on hungrily as women in the circle stripped off their shirts and danced.'

'Though I tried to leave the circle, some of my male peers blocked me from doing so.'

Unsettled by the incident, Ms Jones said she decided to write an article about it and detailed the reaction in a second Woroni article published this week.

Ms Jones argued the 'tradition' encouraged the first-year boys to participate in behaviour that objectified women.

Ms Jones said although she expected the article to draw some controversy, she never expected the backlash she received after it was posted to the university hall's Facebook group.

She said heated online arguments and a barrage of comments ensued.

While some people blasted the song in the dorm hallways in protest, Ms Jones said others told her she was overreacting.

'I was told that it was all 'just a bit of fun' and that I was attacking a much-loved B&G 'tradition' that was central to college culture.'

Ms Jones said despite the backlash, she believed writing the article was the best decision she has made.

For each negative reaction, she said she received several more comments from women who had their own 'Eagle Rock' stories.

As a result, the B&G Residents Committee held an open meeting about the 'tradition.'

A new policy for the song has been drafted as a result of the meeting, but has yet to be implemented, Ms Jones said.

The police bans men from circling women during the 'Eagle Rock' and would ban it from being played at mixers, formal events and external venues, Ms Jones said.

New students would also be alerted to the 'tradition' and if the song was going to be played, a warning alarm would sound to warn those who wanted to leave the dance floor.

The song has yet to be played at any of the hall's events this year, Ms Jones said.

Ps. Does the nrl run the ANU?

I ask this because they appear to think the solution is to ban the song rather than address the serious issue of sexual assault. That type of wrong headed authority is classic nrl-logic.

Only if the girls are willing young Harry ... only if the girls are willing.

I would say the women in the circle, removing their shirts and dancing (the ones the males were apparently eyeing 'hungrily', how very descriptive) were 'willing', just quietly.

Just make sure the warning siren is sounded so the womyn can leave the dance floor, the women can stay...

So the usual rubbish political correct speak response to this is to ban a song instead of arresting a bunch of juvenile delinquents who are committing acts of sexual assualt and gross indecency.
