Brett Kenny

ive been watching the best of the best of the eighties, and as much as I hate Parramatta, boy Brett Kenny was some player. And he did it in all the biggest games. Talk about a big game player. I know this will probably get shot down on here, but IMO Kenny absolutely smokes Darren Lockyer every day of the week. I often wonder why Bert’s achievements have never really been celebrated, because he really did it all. Maybe he said the wrong thing about the wrong person at the wrong time.

I agree with you having watched Bert smoke Manly last century

What younger generations don't appreciate is that prior to Super League, these legends were just freaks of nature.

2 nights of training after work and a Saturday afternoon Captain's Run, no rehab, no welfare programs - yet the stars of last century produced footy magic for us every Sunday :inlove:

So blessed to have witnessed these players from 1976 to now

Absolutely agree with everything you’ve posted there.

Although he was from doesn't-matta, one thing I always liked about Brett Kenny was that unlike a few of his team mates, he wasn't an arrogant prick about their success (unlike that glory hound thug who Ray Warren liked to call "Mr Perpetual Motion"....). He enjoyed the success obviously, but he never let it go to his head.

And he was a clean player who played it fair. You wouldn't see any head highs from him or other dirty stuff that goes on. He just played the game to the best of his ability. And boy did he have ability.

Oh, and he was a fan of The Undertaker so he couldn't be all bad 😉

Bert is the best natural footy player I've seen. He was so much more gifted then Lewis, he owned him head to head in Origin. Great player, still can't forgive him for 82 and 83 though the bastard - 2 tries in each GF.

Kev we were talking about the same thing on the weekend.
Kenny was the best after Lewis in the early 80s and Wally has said many times Bert had his measure.
Couldn't agree with what you say more.

I loved watching him play so much I had to give myself the odd uppercut to remind myself he played for Parra.

I hatred Brett Kenny almost as much as Rayb Price but admire his natural abilities as a Rugby League player.

Of that Eels side the guy I hated most (after Ray Price) was Eric Grothe Sr. I hated that he just carved defence to bits and none of our guys seemed to be able to tackle him. I would shout out the Tele "tackle his legs, he can't run without them." And every time they would try and grab his shoulders and he would just brush them off. I guess tackling Grothe must have been much harder than it looked.

If Manly had Kenny, would have won 82 & 83, plus maybe more.
He didn’t run, he glided and scored freakish tries with a swerve where his body looked like rubber....
Recall some interceptions and dummies making opposing players look like U10’s....
Seen him at GC Casino in November last year at the Atrium bar with most of that Eels side there.
Friendly enough bloke that had plenty of time for the average punters, unlike a few arrogant team mates, 1 particular who almost got in a few fights.
Agree he was the natural in those times, but Steve Rogers was up there with him imo for most gifted players in those good old days, though Rogers peaked in the late 70’s.....old am I....

My favourite cellarman.....funny all the Parra teams since ‘86 have joined him down there

I also admired the zip zip man...what a nickname!

Classic Cellarman! I think Cliffy had a stint in that occupation. What tasks does a cellarman carry out? Keg changes etc. There was quite a few cellarman running around in the Winfield cup back in the day. Them and sales reps. It'd be good to get a profile up again when players score. Maybe include the junior club and some basic details.
