2025 recruitment & retention

Retention and Recruitment is harder than most people on here think, I mean do you honestly think that just because you have the "money" or "desire" to get a player to your club then thats enough to make it happen??

FIRSTLY: Every player has a club they are already associated with so they ALREADY have a link or connection to that club, there is your first hurdle,
as "Quality" players who are looked after by that club they are not going anywhere...SIMPLE...
Look at the Trjbojevic's, DCE etc and same would go for players like Cleary, Martin, Hughes, Munster etc, These top quality players only leave if there is an issue with the club or are ready for retirement and looking to get a "better deal" for their last contract.

SECOND: They all have managers and the managers have a bigger say in where players actually go if they are indeed looking to leave their current club, and these managers either have "favoured"clubs or "favoured" relationships with certain people at certain clubs, SO no matter what you throw at them they are not even looking, they may use your club to "up the value" or "Time pressure" another club but thats all it is.

THIRD: Is the player themselves and if they would even look at playing at your club, and this would come down to location, Coaching, Facilities and even Fan bases.
A player wanting to play in Queensland will more than likely not sign with the Warriors, and other players who have personal issue with members of coaching staff would not sign at that club.

The reason Ive written this post is because there is NO MAGIC BULLET, all clubs are in the same position, they all have a "core" group of players, they all have a couple of marquee players and they all have some "juniors" that came through their system or came to grade with that club.
and no matter how much hoping or how much whinging we do thats the system.
Don't blame the club for not getting certain players, because they are not available or Manly was never an option to them regardless of what the media talk is.

So whats the solution?
the clubs main and only hope is its administration, and how that administration sets up the pathways system, The best way to get top talent into your core group is through the juniors, look at every teams past success and this will be a common theme.
Its then up to management to nurture and secure those juniors as well as manage the marquee contracts and add "roster fillers" around the group to meet the NRL salary cap rules.
and thats the second part of building a premiership winning team, getting the right "roster fillers" at the right prices to ADD value to the team , not just add "A Number".

Part of our problem is we have had too much administrative changes in the past decade and no real backbone when it came to managing the salary cap and contracts,
I'm hoping Mestrov gets to hang around for a long stint and I'm pretty confident he will turn it around, he's already shown he is not scared to make the hard calls and hes also pretty shrewd when it comes to negotiating and seems to put the club first.

Thanks, excellent post! Couple of related points...

You mention location, this is even more of an issue when players have partners, let alone school age children. Changing city or even country is a massive call.

The other one is personal issues. Fans love to say we should sign player X or why on earth didn't we retain player Y, but there's a myriad of possible reasons why a player won't be considered a good fit for a roster or club. A lot of that comes down to the club's culture and standards. Many times we see the more desperate clubs pay for talent that doesn't work out for them. It's never only about the talent.

The thing is, I feel our recruitment has made some poor decisions in the past and regardless of ppl taking offence or not feeling this is true, the poor results prove this is true....,but more recently, I feel signings like Brown (inspirational), Talau ( back to his rookie standout performances), Brooks (I rate him but can be better) ,(Simpkin - we needed a real 9 desperately) and Lodge, (until injured he transformed the pack on his own, but now a concern moving forward after 20 serious setbacks) are on track and if we could get 1 more quality forward could match any team in the comp....I feel we are far closer to a competitive team than most and a few key area's like ruck tempo and winning the wrestle and we are going to give the comp a real shake.

And yet we signed Lodge - a bloke with a well-established history of violence towards women, injuries and short-term stays at clubs... what does that say about our club's culture and standards?

I guess it puts us into the "desperate" category of which you speak...

Roosters are 1 of the most dominate clubs the past decade & had Lodge signed. What does that say about their culture? or broncos, Warriors. What about Storm signing Curtis Scott after he was sacked by Raiders for his off field issues? Their culture seems to be fine

I bet everyone here would take AFB back in a heartbeat?

Yeah but the rorters resigned Jennings too... and God help us if we are using the Broncos as our benchmark...

Scott was at the Storm first - he was a young gun when Storm signed him and the only thing he had against his record when he signed with faders was that he knew how to deal with DV perpetrators...

Embarrassing enough that Walker was here as long as he was but his DV issues occurred when he was already under contract...

Manly actually WENT TO MARKET to buy a bloke with a record like Lodge's...I have only just now become aware that AFB also had DV charges when we signed him...

What price a win? We want rainbows to demonstrate tolerance but we will hand out contracts to DV perpetrators... disgusting...

Rumours that Ryan Matterson is being shopped around under the new Ryles regime.

He would be a good signing to play edge/middle.

Maybe the opportunity to play alongside Dean could sway him over here.

Not crazy mobile but agreed. His versatility would be huge for our forward pack. Bring him in and i’d feel better about the state of our forward pack and second row depth.

Hopefully he gets a run this weekend.

Hooper revealed a $4 million outlay for the Tigers for the brothers over the course of their deals.

“I have heard it averages at $500,000 per season over four years, so it is essentially $2 million each and a $4 million package deal,” Hooper said.

We couldn't afford 500k a season?

I can provide some feedback in that Hooper is, has and always will be WAY OFF the mark with the entire non-financial and financial background regarding the Fainu signings with the Wests Tigers.

I seldom comment on such matters but the financial amount is structured in such away that the combined deal is well in excess of $4million with staggered incentives that would make your eyes water.

What Hooper has heard and what was agreed too are completely different; they obtained a fantastic deal but once again, the friendly media hacks aligned with their manager and the former football manager made it seem like Manly were "incompetent" for letting them go, that's not the case at all.

It was sad to see them leave the Club however, we couldn't and did not enter into a bidding war for them and at that point, they were agitating for a release and then granted permission to leave.

I agree with signing matteson, he is a great defender and ball player, we just need a good prop to start with paseka, or a bench one to do the middle spell. NAS and matteson for me
we are more likely to get Saiafiti than NAS
