2025 recruitment & retention

I'm far from convinced the Shoe is yesterday's news. I suspect for a number of reasons, pushing him into the second row when he was coming of age after being seen as the next big thing at 5/8, injuries, weight issues partly the result of the second row/5/8 switch, personal demons probably brought on by frustration regarding how he was being used etc resulted in the likelihood of him reaching his goals at Manly, diminishing year by year. I think he signed on the big dollar contract because it was the biggest available but I dont think his heart was in it. His future at Manly had died.

A fresh start at the Rabbits with a known successful coach who gets the best out of his cattle, will reignite his career. Whether he hits the heights expected of him will much depend upon his personal issues and how he faces his new role. Personally I hope he shows what I think he is capable of, though hopefully not against Manly.
If anyone can get Schu to potential it would be Bennett or Bellamy, but Manly gave him e HEAP of chances including 5/8 and he just wasn't in it.....fleeting moments of brilliance was drowned by disinterest and mistakes and a book of excuses.
Nice bloke and wish him well, but until his ''off field" dedication improves in a big way, will be just another talented boat that became a shipwreck....

As I keep saying , we are short an experienced edge forward , Bateman could be this player.

We are short a quality hooker ( or are we , maybe it’s not silly thinking Simpkin to 9 Croker to 13).

But one things for sure Jurbo shouldn’t be our 13, move him to the prop rotation.

Croker may have enough skills to be that ball playing , defensive lock we need.

Burbo for me goes to the bench , and can cover a forward or back injury , move him to the centre , Garrick to wing or fullback if needed.

Jazz would seem to me to be a benchie forward.

So really , we probably don’t need many more players to be a reasonable force in 2025, especially if Turbo could actually play all the games …..,cough cough splutter.

Tannah Boyd would, now Cooper Johns is gone, be the absolute worst player in the NRL.

If you want someone who cant kick a touch finder out on the full after a penalty but will kick out on the full in general play 50% of the time, he is your man.

If you want a stupid penalty or dropped pass at the worst possible time, he is your man.

Perfect! The kid will fit right in !

Just sayin’

Bateman is a no from me.

His stats recently aren't outstanding, he's now 31 years old and he seems to have a habit of publicly putting himself first above the team (see his current status at Wests, plus his 2019 Grand Final week episode).

For what it's worth, it looks like a fair few people on the Tigers forum won't miss him... they just don't want their club to foot most of the bill for him to play elsewhere.

I agree for the most part but having watched him for Wests he still has a lot to offer in a better squad. And we desperately need an edge player. For one or two seasons it’s worth a crack

A guy on the tigers forum that usually has correct info said manly want Tigers to pay 60% of his contract over the next 2 years & wont budge. Tigers have said they will only pay $200k per year so it’s at a stalemate… guess it will come down to how much Tigers really want him gone & need top 30 spots in their squad as they currently have none left for 2025 with Sione Fainu still off contract

Yep , at $650k no way , but if the Tigers pick up $350k of this he’s worth a shot.

Loads of experience, may in fact do better in a good side.

We are not flush with backrow options, to be paying a bloke an average NRL wage or under, who maybe past his best but still a fast, talented player in a better environment seems a great opportunity.
The current options have Qld standard options with Oka obviously super, Ben inconsistent and the other options seem almost Wld cup standard....though Navale may suprise in 2025....I hope

This would be us paying about $260k or so right? I would not be paying him a cent more than that. The guy is incredibly toxic. If you say he's at a garbage club, which is true, Talau was fed up at the Tigers too, but he pulled the same stuff at the Raiders when they made the GF... You don't make the GF as an average club. Ricky is certainly an NRL-level coach, which can't be said about Benji, but he still had issues. Big no thanks.

I'd prefer Bullemor in the second row. I wouldn't want an aging Bateman, who is 31, to be the reason we don't extend Bullemor. I wouldn't want him to be blocking a younger candidate like Navale, either. Even a bulked up Burbo I would want playing FG. If we're out of options, I would take him, but the way I see it, we still have options.

Chee-Kam at the very least isn't toxic, and was a hard-worker at South's this year.

It would not surprise me at all to see Frog turned into a bench utility aka Lawton. Hooker, Halves. Lawton could also cover Centre, Backrow, Lock. Froggy might be more a lock than an edge I'm thinking.

But a different option is needed in the main at 9. Coach clearly loves this little leader. I just don't see him being left right out.

I'm not going to assert that it won't work, as I have been wrong about some of our signings in the past year... But surely there are better options, discounted rate or not.
