2 worst issues at Manly today - outside Defence

maxta

First Grader
The attempt to shift the ball and play sideways before earning the right and firstly winning some momentum through the middle.
Yes there were arguably without the 3 best front rowers in Paseka, Aloiai and Jake.....but still need to go forward to give your back's space
Even last night the 1st half there was an itch to play sideways where even the NRL's most destructive forward Haumole, was going sideways and throwing dud passes in an attempt to stretch the opposition defence, instead of playing through it
Second half looked 200% better, just tucking the ball under his wing and charging direct and bending the line and guess what....line breaks and points came off it !!
Even the deadliest backline I recall as a kid was Eels in the 80's and Jack Gibson still made sure his troops up front got into the battle of hard charges and attacking directly behind the ruck to set up the backline shift and this was back in the 80's
As a lock in my junior days in the Cronulla comp, we were fortunate enough to have the great ET and other Shark greats assist the side and Always were insistent that regardless of how good or fast your outside backs are, win the trenches or at least rip into the guts before playing pretty
Well NRL has changed in many ways, but imo, this is a non negotiable in rugby league....I mean you don't need necessarily the BEST pack to compete, but need a WILLING pack and to play a style though that ruck I would call FIGHT OVER EVERY BONE....and we don't compete hard enough here, regardless of excuses who is there, the fabric of the current backbone is missing.

Secondly have been sticking up for the coach, but the players seem so protected and non accountable for inept sub standard performances and he keeps saying rubbish about the effort being there, when anyone who knows 10% of the game can clearly see it's not....and while continues to make these performances acceptable to the players, he is enabling the poor effort of players by holding zero accountability....very frustrating indeed
I do also feel as professionals the players are individually accountable, but for goodness sake, let us hear from the coach after a crappy loss "that was a terrible performance, handling was filthy and the defence "again" in the middle was made of marshmallow"....at least then as fans, we can expect improvement rather than acceptance, knowing the next game things may "improve"
Yes there's protecting the players and then there's living in fantasy land and recently these interviews are on the "Peter Pan" levels ....
