Just watched the 1988 Yorkshire Cup Final between Leeds and Castleford. Pretty good game to watch. Cliff Lyons was the man of the match.
Leeds also had ET, Garry Schofield, Lee Crooks, Hugh Waddell (who joined Manly the next year), Sam Backo and Mal Reilly as coach.
Castleford had Kevin Ward(who was a machine in this game), Ronnie Gibbs and Gary Belcher.
This match played just a few weeks after the Sydney GF. This was Cliffy's 3rd off season in England.
Full match is on Youtube if anyone is interested.

Cliffy for Gundagai Tigers in 1983.

Commentators: He'll want a big glass of cold water at half time.
Cliffy: Pulls out a couple of darts....

Also: why do team-mates insist upon dragging you to your feet after a 90metre sprint?

"Hey... I just ran the length of the field...and scored while you buggers jogged along behind me. If I wanna lay here for awhile...leave me the hell alone!" lol

Watched the whole game. That was fantastic!

Teams played so much deeper, really exciting stuff.

At first the 10m rule was really good and opened up the game. Then Chris Anderson at Storm & others worked out by the late 1990s the most consistent and easiest way to get upfield was to quickly surrender in tackles and take the 10m at each tackle by using a one off hit up and dummy half scoots.

One day the NRL will finally work out what the game needs is not 10m defence line, but 10m provided by 5m attack and 5m defence. Which is what the rules were in the first place anyway, but referees gave up on enforcing the 5m for the attacking team.

I remember it and I like it BUT how can the ref and the video refs keep up or will the Roosters and Melbourne and Brisbane and.... get the benefit of the blind eye from the ref for offside play.

Touchies help out.

also I watched the 1970 GF highlights - the ref penalises manly for being inside the 5 in attack at one point. One ref managed it ok.

But can you see our current crop being able to handle it?
I know what we will all be saying, here's another leg up the field for the Roosters

When you think about it, the current rules are just dumb. For doing their job of tackling the opposition with the ball in hand, the rules punish the defence by making them give up 10m of their territory that they haven't even lost!

You can see why some coaches tell their teams to not do much in defence, just do enough to make the tackle, don't give away a penalty and don't let the attack make a break. Then with a still settled organised defence you just worry about defending the last tackle.
