1987 - Tough, skillful Footy !!

This was the first Manly GF I was around to see and what a team it was...
The skills and way the ball was passed about unstructured to pick apart defensive lines.
Early kicks, big hits (5m), and the attack played what was in front of them with Cliff Lyons about 5 -10 steps ahead of them all.
The SCG woud have dust flying , the players ran out with no warm up on the field so the excitement as they entered the arena was Massive with confetti and flags flying.
Love my footy today, but damn these were the good old days of pure footy where the passion for the game was bigger than the mighty dollar...what an atmosphere and spectacle and great Manly side....Ward, OConner, Lyons, Des, Rambo and Crusher still all time favourites to this day!!

One of my favourites.
That campaign reminds me of 4 things.
Pink Floyd's learning to fly.
Fatty splitting his melon open against easts in the semi.
Kevin ward.
And the leagues club after the GF...
Great days...

Well that was awesome to watch.

You'd think the field was 150 metres wide with all the unstructured plays and multiple offloads!

I'm beginning to think the footy was better back then instead of 5 tackles...kick! (repeat).

That day was so hot.
Watched it at the Harbord Hilton.
Home, shower, change then leaguies,
What a day...

First GF win I witnessed. My very first memories are losing back to back GF's against Parra (hence my loathing for them), so to finally win one was awesome.

The first Grand Final I attended, I was 18.
After the game, a mate and I went back to the club.
So hot sitting in the sun at the SCG, but had plenty of amber fluid to keep myself hydrated.

My girlfriend dumped me the week before and she went to the GF with her new bloke from Narrabeen. I felt sick in the stomach all day because of it even though Manly won. I remember I was at a BBQ at a mate's house at Hurlstone Park that day. It was a stinking hot day, they had a new phone number that was the previous number of Ashfield Swimming Pool. We took about 300 calls during the game from people asking if the pool was open because it was so hot.

Oh, I got the lady back next year and we've been married for nearly 30 years. She doesn't like the footy though. Must have been her company at the 87 GF. After going to the first drawn GF in 78 I didn't witness a winning Manly GF untill 2008.

My best memory of that day was back at the leagues club when the crowd was passing every player over their shoulders (crocodile dundee style), while singing the player's name. My mate saw someone he thought was Paul Shaw and yelled out his name. Two seconds later this bloke was up on everyone's shoulder with everyone singing "Paul Shaw, Paul Shaw". The look of fear in that guy's face while yelling "I'm not Paul Shaw, I'm not Paul Shaw" is something I will never forget.

Second Manly game i can remember going to at 9 yrs old. Dad was a bus driver and got us in at half time for free. Wont forget the man who gave his seat to me, what a legend - i think he was also a raiders supporter.

If cliffy played for any other team he’d be an immortal no questions.

Great to see players hitting the ball at speed, Silky ball movement, proper play the balls and scrums.

Sounds like she was a closet Raiders supporter and maybe the other guy was too. After the gf was run and done she came back!

Well done on the 30 years! I've never done the 'get back together again' thing so it's cool it worked for you.
I met a couple who worked at the pro-shop of a golf club (in Brissie) and one day I asked the lady why she wore two engagement rings.
She said that they got engaged once, broke it off and she kept the ring. They got engaged once more and she said she wanted another engagement ring and he obliged. They both seemed happy with that turn of events, so I smiled politely and left.

1987 - I dunno what I was doing. Probably working 16 hours a day in some sweat shop. You guys are soft!

That's why 87 is so special to me and will always be my favourite.

Well said, GE. The bloke she went with was a mad Eagles fan. I have dragged her to Brookie once or twice in 30 years. It was funny on the day, the event of a broken relationship overwhelmed my love of Manly on he day. But I have rewatched the match a few times since. If we play a GF at the SCG next year or whenever, I'd like to be there. I hope it is cooler than 1987 though.

Great day. So hot but Cliffs owned it.
Two weeks earlier the toughest game of football I’ve seen live was played in similar heat at the SCG versus the Rorters. There were no prisoners taken that day. It was relentless.

Yeh mate - was at that Roosters game and dust was flying...I sat near that corner where David Ronson scored out wide.
Also in 1987 I seen near the best game that season against Souths at Redfern oval
Down early by 10 or 12 the Manly side got over them in a fiery clash....Ward and Crusher led them theough the middle and the gutsy Ron Gibbs scored a spectacular chip n chase diving try....Mal Cochrane was great - could go on, but just an Amazing game.
