    Enablers vs Match Winners

A mate and former Eagles player of the day told me they'd inflate Crusher's tackle counts so he'd be picked for SOO ;-) Damaging runner of the ball no doubt. To me he was more the luxury match winner than the enabler and at the time we could afford him mostly with the 'superstar' lineup we had...

    1977 Manly

He was one hard hitting bastard that Allan Thompson the second rower. But Alan Thompson got the arse mid-season I think; it was all rather ugly. Fatty was captain and involved according to rumours (who knows?). Great player though; set up our one and only try in the 76 GF, was the difference in...

    1977 Manly

I was on the hill for the Easts game. Easts had been a disappointment after 74-75 and for the first 35 mins they had their mojo back. I remember their fans applauding them as they walked back to halfway after their last try. But from there we ended the half with a spectacular length of the field...

Commitment. I'd be turning up to brookie about lunchtime after playing Sunday morning. before that My dad would take me for every home game. On the hill.

poor bears. I saw big Herman Hamilton going round for them, and John Gray put on a try for Bruce Goldie Walker. We bought them for the following year (or maybe Walker first then Gray). Walker coached our Sea Eagles Shield competition-winning St Augustines side in 78. A bitter sweet year for him...

    Enablers vs Match Winners

Apologies for the late entry to the discussion - been in England too long (mushing my brain). Wonderful to hear all the love for Ian Martin. Agree with all said. Seems low tacking is indeed coming back somewhat these days and we have some excellent practitoners esp. Jake T and Api K. Ian Martin...

Brian Kelly rookie of the year contender

Am always delighted when those idiots don't pick Manly players, so thanks Blues and Cane toads for leaving Walker, DCE out, and only putting Jake T on the bench (small mercies). DCE is automatic bench selection for them imho, and Hayne over Walker after the last game? Morons.

    Myles ACL injury?

He's done a couple of good things but I'd have Lussick in the rotation over him any day.

Brian Kelly rookie of the year contender

Really impressed with this kid in the games I've seen. Strong and well balanced runner, can play footy with the ball in his hands, seems very composed. Will only get better and better in defensive reads but already is pretty good at it in probably the trickiest position for that these days with...

    Is this the Wright fullback?

@ Zarsoff ; the NY World's Fair reference: are we talking Trylon and Perishpere ? And any mention of the blondeness that was Alan Maddalena has got to be worth some points

That's an ugly join the dots picture eaglebuzz. Hoping it doesn't take shape like that. That gambling investigation is a sword of Damocles.

    Stewart and Matai status

I can't see anything much about this on the forums or in the papers. Are they both un-officially medically retired, but the club is paying them to the end of their contracts? Is there something else going on here eg to do with relations with the new coach or the club in general? The papers...

    [Resurrected] Haslers first year

Robbo was one of those risky, possibly a dud, signings who eliminated his handling weaknesses and became as good as he could possibly be. ditto Wolfman. Bell was a proven and reliable try scorer. Ballin was a tackling machine with a beautiful pass off the ground. The spine players, Orford...

Stewart deserves Lyon's share of recognition

Wiedler's just trying to sell newspapers as usual, but the general point seems right to me. Brett Stewart is certainly deserving of a huge sendoff. It's interesting now a kind of precedent has been set for what a good farewell looks like -- as it has been a fitting effort by the club.

Thank you Jamie Lyon ( Killer)

A superb player. As many have said it will put a big hole in our team's composure, attacking potential, defence and competitive edge for some time to come. You just can't replace top quality players with that much experience easily. And as Chip'n'chase says, he could do everything. I share...

    Choc is officially retired

Actions speak louder and longer than words in the fullness of time for me. A **** stirrer and a bit of a ratbag (after all he was from Narrabeen--always full of psychos when I was playing junior league) but an absolute lynchpin of the pack that gave us the enduring dominance for so many years...

Did Brett Stewart do a lot of good stuff I didn't see?

Stewart plays = our probability of winning goes up dramatically. Organising the defence, cleaning up, slotting in for the occasional kick in general play while DCE is out, etc. The gameplan today was much more a centre of the park + runs from the halves so less need for leftside attacking plays...
