    A lot of the time, it’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever done...there are just certain days/events you dread for a week leading up to it, and they burn you out - mentally in particular. Australia Day weekend is worse than NYE these days. Thank goodness for a nice block of days off to recover!

    BTW, they’ve picked a good ‘un to head up the ADF contribution. I worked for Jake Ellwood in my last Defence gig a few years back, before he was promoted. Brilliant, very switched on leader, but also a kind and compassionate human.

    Those 3000 troops will have very little to do with fire control - it’s not their bag. They’ll be a big part of the cleanup and recovery efforts, but basically the firies have to go in and do their thing, other agencies come in around or behind them to assist, but they’d be more of a hindrance...

    The army has been involved for weeks, it just hasn’t been well publicised - a reserve infantry unit I used to work at has had soldiers on the ground assisting with establishing fire breaks, clearing debris etc - as have the other units in the brigade, in various parts of the state. ADF cooks...
