Manly did him a favour back in 1970, if it wasn't for Bucknell breaking his jaw, Sattler would have disappeared into rugby league obscurity, instead he's now part of rugby league folklore.
We always hear the bullsh%t story of how Manly pillaged Souths of it's players, Bob Moses left Souths at the end of 1970 because they didn't want him, as in those days Souths had virtually an international pack in reserve grade.
Brannighan and O'neil joined in 1972, as Souths expected them to play for far less than what Manly were prepared to offer.
But who really cares about what John Sattler has to say except for "The Pride of the League" fans

everyone said that sleepy John Bucknell was told to go out and smash him , this is bullcrap I was there that day and the team was told go out play hard and stand up to souths niggling play, it happened after a scrum break and sattler had already hit sleepy in the scrum so John followed and decked him with one punch it was
a retalative hit not deliberate as they have made out. but the souths pack then virtually smashed john out over the next 35 minutes. But I agree had that not happened he Sattler would have faded into obscurety .John Bucknell was never the thug they made him out to be but was a great guy who never really reached his potential.he retired in 1973.
