I'm watching the NSW cup and just thinking WHY THE HELL DID WE NOT HAVE 3 GRADES ON AT GOSFORD THIS ARVO. While on that I'm sorry but we have to move to Gosford to save our future. Great stadium, plenty of corporates. Brookie is a dump and won't get fixed any time soon. Gosford surface is like carpet. We provide a winning team and the crowds will attend.

I heard Blocker on Grandstand earlier, and he touched on something that has been on my mind for some time. He spoke about the Tigers and their young blokes. He says they also have another young crop ready to go with their younger sides doing well this year.

What struck me was this, he spoke a little about young blokes coming up into the NRL, and the completely different game they find themselves in. He used the description that, the list of things you shouldn't be doing in the NRL is longer than the list of things you can do.

What he means is that the things that catch your eye, the coaches eye or team selectors eyes in the lower grades, like the toughness, the speed, the skill or the way they play the game in general is what gets them selected to play top level.

Then, the coaches try to change and mould them to fit into the structures they have in place for the top side, and they begin to change their style of play, and it takes away their natural, Heaven may care attitude, that got them selected in the first place. It stifles some young blokes.

I think a bit looser reign on some of the young guys, and let them do what they do, or have been doing in lower grades may pay dividends in the NRL.

A good case in point is Dave Taylor. At St Brendans, playing high school footy, Dave was 115kgs. He was a monster that could do anything on the field. He would chip and regather, kick goals, field goals, had a big side step and enough energy to keep his defence strong for 80mins. He was a freak. Not just because of his size (there are many "boys" that are 100kgs or more playing school footy. He was a freak because he loved playing the game and he had a huge arsenal of skills. We have never seen the best of Dave at NRL level. I don't think he even knew he was a monster. Anyway...what happened? He went to the Bronco's and Bennett decided he needed to forget all that he could do at the drop of a hat, and concentrate on becoming a no nonsense front rower. He quickly stagnated.

I know the step up is huge! But if a kid has got something special enough to get them selected, let them run with it in the NRL. That's what Taylor is doing at the Tigers. Bear in mind, he could just be a crap coach with no idea, and just letting his team enjoy their footy with no real direction. LOL!

100 per cent agree. It is one of the main reasons the game is now a Borefest as they mould these kids to fit the ridiculous rules.

I hate the word Structure . we played to our structure . our structures are working . its what's the game has come to you listen to the old timers and a lot of them are disinterested in the game because of it . A comparison is Rugby not that im a big fan of rugby but where is the running game they use to play at Randwick back in the day was typical of running rugby and its been ruined by structure and rugby league is the same

Structured game plans destroy the instinctive plays.@

Manly always had the free spirits like, Bozo, Shearer, Cliffy and Snake. :)

I don't watch a lot of NSW Cup but Hodges has thrown more nice passes and made more darts in 20 minutes than Ballin has all year.Surely he must be an option for 20 minutes in first grade to relieve Ballin given our total lack of flare at the moment.

I agree too, the free flowing, chance the hand instinctiveness is more or less gone. Evidenced by second rowers and centres being virtually interchangeable. And forwards scoring just as many tries as backs. Emphasis on athletes rather than footballers. Remember tigers run to the premiership in 2005 and parra in 09 that was based on the ad lib and confidence to actually play footy.

It upsets other teams "structures and patterns" if you can pull it off. Is much better to watch, and surely more fun for the players.

I really like the way penrith play. They are really he only unique team in the comp. we used to be, When our players gave a ****.

Good post Moz and it's exactly the reason why people are turning off the NRL in droves. Robotic players doing robotic plays, over refereed, over coached and over commercialised crap. i'm loving watching the free flowing games here in NYC and NSW cup. 1 ref who's controlling the game without blowing the sht out of his whistle, no stupid video ref crap stifling the game. It's why watching English super league is more entertaining than NRL. Ever since that fuktard Greensnot got his fingers in the game it's been like pushing sht uphill with your nose. Let the game be what it is. Players with talent playing off the top of their head. Sticking players exclusively on the left edge or right edge is just bull****. Let the run all over the park and for godsake drop the interchange to 6 replacements only, go back to 1 ref, use video ref for try grounding ONLY,and get the game back to the simple, tough hard grind it should be, reliant on fatigue and natural skill. SACK GREENTURD NOW.

They need more roofing up there as it usually pours and the fact that there is no Southern Stand, means we get wet.

Albury must have paid Manly a Motza or JoKelly has relos down there

Actually if Hodges doesn't play first grade next week then there is something seriously wrong with our coaching set up.Not sure what he needs to do.The Mounties are top of the ladder and our first grade side is a rabble and I assume they bought him to be a back up in any case.Give the kid a go.
