No billion dollar TV deal for the NRL rights?

Why do we believe any of these reports. They are pure speculation.
Of course Channel Nein is going to put in a low initial offer because they have the right to make the Final offer.
I hope the Independent Commission thinks of the fans that attend games when they analyse the various bids. If not afternoon football will be a thing of the past.

They only get the right to the final offer if any other bid does not exceed their current offer by 20%. If the current deal on the table is $800m and Ch7 provide an offer of $1.01b, then Ch9 have no additional benefit in ongoing negotiations.

They can also advertise during the match like what I see elsewhere with ads appearing at the bottom of the screen and then disappearing. It doesn't interfere too much with the show.

THE NRL will dramatically raise the stakes in its $1 billion television battle by holding high-powered meetings this week with Channel 10 and Channel 7.

The Daily Telegraph has been told Gallop will meet with Ten chief executive James Warburton and Seven CEO Tim Worner. It is understood the meetings will occur today and tomorrow.

The NRL will also be represented at the meetings by Shane Mattiske, the game's director of strategy and special projects.

"The stakes are now getting really high," said one television source.

Although the meetings will be vital, it is unlikely either network will officially pitch their bid.

Nine launched its bid last week although the negotiations will continue.

It had been suggested that Nine and pay-television carrier Fox Sports will work together however both have lodged separate bids.

Gallop still believes rugby league can obtain a deal worth $1 billion. Some television insiders though say the NRL will only secure a deal worth $900 million.

Ten executives claim to be "well-placed" in their plans for the NRL rights.

"We have come through the exclusive period (with Nine) and are now keen to sit down with the other networks," Gallop said.

"Our game's ratings are there for everyone to see and it's important that we maximise the value of the rights."

The NRL hope to have the television rights issue sealed by July.

A Seven spokesman said: "We'll continue to maintain a polite silence on the NRL television rights negotiations."

The three networks are all desperate to find out what their rivals will offer.

Nine insiders are keen to know exactly how much Ten will throw at rugby league.

Ten hierarchy has told of a plan to buy the NRL in its entirety and broadcast matches on free-to-air and their digital channel, One.

There have been suggestions that Ten will make a top-level play for the high-rating Monday night football.

Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said the deal would benefit the game."We are well prepared and over the next couple of months we will sit down and look at the best way forward," Richardson said. "It is nothing but positive."
