This headline gave me a laugh:

Knights Coke Deal on Hold

A LUCRATIVE commercial deal between the Newcastle Knights and Coca-Cola is on hold after Danny Wicks's arrest on drug-dealing charges.

One of the NRL's most financially fragile clubs, the Knights had hoped to secure a deal with Coca-Cola that covered drink rights at the club's home ground, EnergyAustralia Stadium.

According to insiders at Coca-Cola, the beverage giant is waiting for the heat around the Wicks story to die down before making a decision on whether it will proceed with the deal.

It was the news Knights chairman Robbie Tew did not want to hear as he went into damage control yesterday, pleading with sponsors to stick by the club.

NEWCASTLE players will be interrogated by club officials over allegations disgraced prop Danny Wicks supplied drugs to teammates.

Knights players will face a grilling from coach Rick Stone, CEO Steve Burraston and chairman Rob Tew over the next 48 hours.

And the court has prohibited Wicks, 24, from contacting Newcastle forward and former housemate Chris Houston, who will be quizzed by Burraston today.

As the Knights reel from the arrest of Wicks, who was charged with six counts of supplying a prohibited drug and two of drug possession, Stone said players will be individually quizzed.

Police are also expected to interview several of Wicks' teammates.

Stone, who learned of Wicks' arrest along with his players after a Wednesday morning training session, said the squad was addressed before training yesterday.

"We have had a chat with the players this morning and there will be a full investigation," Stone said.

Newcastle captain Kurt Gidley, who was playing golf in the Jack Newton charity event at Cypress Lakes golf course in Cessnock yesterday, was unavailable for comment.

Knights board member and former premiership-winning captain Paul Harragon was also reluctant to comment.

It will be interesting to see if the police surveliance and 'phone taps reveal any other knights players are involved.

Could spell doom for the club if there are any other players involved.

Underbelly 4 will be set in Newcastle.  Pity John Candy wasn't still around to play the lead role.

lol.  Does the investigation start when the coaching of what to say finishes?  Or before?  More Knights official "interrogations" like when there were rumours Andrew Johns was habitually on drugs throughout his career, and sniffs the 97 team was drug-tainted.

That's as funny as people believing that getting the Police to "investigate" the Police is a clean process.

The public prosecutor came out two days ago saying she didn't think that any other Knights were implicated. But hold on, there's more......

"A NUMBER of Newcastle Knights first-graders have allegedly been caught on police phone taps or surveillance seeking to purchase or buying drugs from teammate Danny Wicks.

The players are expected to be identified when police unveil in court the extent of evidence gathered in an eight-month covert operation into a northern-NSW-based drug trafficking ring – with links to the Gladiators motorcycle gang – which culminated in Wicks’s arrest on Wednesday.

When 24-year-old Wicks faced Newcastle Local Court that day, police alleged other players were implicated but did not reveal how many or identify them.
However, The Sun-Herald has learned that detectives plan to interview a number of players and are considering laying charges.

‘‘These are extremely serious allegations,’’ Knights chief executive Steve Burraston said last night. ‘‘There is a police investigation under way and in no way would we intend to hinder that investigation with speculation. ‘‘We are unaware of these new allegations. However, if police come to us with the evidence you’re suggesting, it will be dealt with in the appropriate manner.’’
