<div class="cT-storyDetails cfix" /><h5>The NRL and AFL are engaged in a covert battle for broadcasting dollars and playing talent, yet rugby league will always leak players to other codes while its moribund players' association allows it to deliberately depress its salary cap.</h5>

This just reinforces the fact the News LTD should get of the code and let it be run be the clubs etc.  Not only do they force the income down but they also take a signficant proportion of that income for its own use.

Hidden in this article the prime reason why League won't be competitive whilst News Ltd owns and runs and bleeds dry the game:

"NRL rights, on the other hand, are undervalued, principally because the NRL, half owned by News Limited, negotiated with Fox Sports, also half owned by News Limited, a $42 million a year payment for five live games a week. Compare this with the $315.5 million over five years, Foxtel paid to cover four live AFL games a week."

And why do we rarely hear of this burning issue when the media talks about the game?  Why do even the likes of Vautin, not currently employed by Murdoch, instead sycophantically talk up News Ltd and its owned puppet, David Gallop, with barely a word of criticism, ever?

Three words come to mind: monopolies, oligopolies and career paths.

"The NRL deliberately depresses the salary cap because its two owners, News Limited and the ARL, extract $28 million a year.

To be fair, News Limited remits about $5 million of its $8 million share to Melbourne Storm to cover the deficit of its wholly owned club."

This says it all IMO. that $14 mil from news should be going back to the clubs and the Storm should be looking after themselves like every other club has to.

. . . While the NRL's cap is screwed down by its owners and its weak players association relies on handouts, the code will continue to lose players to the AFL and rugby union</h5>

Yes nice one Roy, 'the NRL's cap is screwed down by its owners' - and indeed the NRL itself is screwed by its owners.

Gallop has screwed the game. Remember - he used to work for, protect and stand for News Limited. He was part of the revolt.

Hopefully, he is not around the game much longer - and we have someone with conflict of interest running the game.

Gallop has contributed to the poor state of the game during his tenure however the game itself was ruined by the likes of Rupert Murdoch, Packer for walking out on the ARL and negotiating with Murdoch. John Ribot and the rest of the Super League clowns that walked out on the ARL for the chase of the $$$$.... Where is your big dollar contracts now.
