League's back and so are Geoff Toovey's ongoing disputes with referees

Forget that the Australian summer of cricket is over or that the Charity Shield is looming, the real indicator league is back is that referees have fired up Manly coach Geoff Toovey.

The match officials - Gerard Sutton and Gavin Reynolds - were again in Toovey's firing line after his side's 24-12 trial loss to Cronulla on Friday night. While Toovey did not match his post-game spray of last season, his frustration with the officials appears likely to continue this year.

''The concerning thing for me there was the penalty count,'' Toovey said. ''I thought it was ridiculous - that's a common term.

''I'm still bewildered by it. In my opinion, the [concerning aspect was the] lopsidedness of it … What did it end up? 14-2? C'mon. Anyway, it's a trial for the referees as well.''

By Cronulla's count, the penalties finished 14-5 in favour of the Sharks, in what was new referee boss Tony Archer's first game overseeing the officials after replacing Daniel Anderson. Toovey was fined $10,000 by the NRL last year after an emotional rant after his team's loss to South Sydney.

Despite limping from the field with a twisted ankle, Steve Matai is not expected to be sidelined for an extended period while winger Jorge Taufua, who missed the trial, is battling an elbow injury that could lead him to be ruled out of Manly's Auckland Nines team. New recruit Dunamis Lui, who has a virus, also missed Manly's first hit-out.

''I don't want to draw too much from the first trial,'' Toovey said. ''It was a solid hit-out and there were some good things done there. The main thing is everyone came through OK … I thought [prop] Josh Starling was really good and his carries were good.

''I don't think we've won a trial in like 10 years. It's one of those things. The trial did the job for us. We got to test a few young blokes and see where they are at and the experienced blokes got a bit of contact.''

Meanwhile, the salary cap continues to bite at Manly with veteran back-rower Glenn Stewart linked to a switch to Canberra at the end of this season.

Toovey said that he wanted the 30-year-old to finish his career at the club.

''Glenn has had the best off-season he has had in a couple of years,'' Toovey said. ''He has been an integral part of our team for many years. We will be doing the best to make sure he is at our club.''

Forgot about Liam! Another talented local kid!

Central coast junior product.

Thanks, thought he was from Narrabeen, but I see Berkeley vale on his short resume. Manly must have signed him very young..

The manly website says we signed him to a 3 year contract last year & he played Ball for manly.

Great report ER, never saw alot in Saunders either. The younger Indigenous centre Jesse Ramien certainly has alot of talent so watch him (I think) in SG Ball this year??

Jake's brother (fullback) Tom is playing 2 years up and just has that something about him in terms of skill. In juniors last year he basically was given the ball alot at fullback and he would end up running riot.

Chalie Taylor the centre has massive wraps on him and great to hear they are trying him at centre. Must be re-signed as awesome ability.

Really hoping Jamil has a better year now he is back in the fold. Very talented lock when playing well.

I agree with you Darren on your post, the last I head Jamil has still not resigned for Manly, he is a good hard player and I hope he keeps concentrating on his footy. I have also been heard Tom's brother Jake should be playing a fair bit of 1sts this year and possibly the leading Prop for Manly. I have been told through some people at the club that his brother Tom will be the fullback for Manly after Brett Stewart and Charlie Taylor will be the next Back coming through the Australian Schoolboy winger last year and Dual Schoolboy NSW rugby/ league player has just completed year 12 at St Augustine College Brookvale. Manly look great for their future, with having born and bred local boys and others who are being developed in Manly's System. Let hope the club looks after these kids and No One Else Snaps them up.
