Doc gives Mateo a glimmer of hope

Greg Prichard | July 14, 2008
http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/news/doc-gives-mateo-a-glimmer-of-hope/2008/07/13/1215887452599.html

THERE was speculation yesterday that Parramatta star Feleti Mateo's knee injury could end his season, but the club's doctor, Michael Johnson, one of the country's leading orthopaedic surgeons, said his gut feeling was that it wasn't nearly that bad.

Mateo left the field with a medial ligament strain early in the second half of Saturday's game against South Sydney.

He eventually returned to finish the game, with the knee heavily strapped, and booked in for an MRI scan today.

There was talk yesterday that the injury could keep the five-eighth out for up to eight weeks.

Asked where Mateo stood for this Friday's Eels clash with Manly, Johnson said there was a chance he could play.

"I don't know where this talk of Feleti being out for as much as eight weeks is coming from," Johnson said.

"We're not going to know anything for sure until he has the scan. He strained the medial ligament and also sprained his ankle at the same time.

"There was a possibility he had done a bit of damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, but I don't think there is much to worry about there. I think the medial strain is the problem, but my gut feeling is that he won't miss more than one or two games and there is a chance he won't miss any games at all.

"To suggest he could miss more than a couple of games is going over the top."

Johnson said several other injured Parramatta players would be assessed today including prop Josh Cordoba (abdomen),halfback Brett Finch (hamstring strain) as well as prop Fuifui Moimoi (corked knee).

Denis Fitzgerald: Manly could beat Parramatta by 40

By Dean Ritchie
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/sport/nrl/story/0,26799,24013208-5006066,00.html

A DEEPLY concerned Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald last night predicted his under-achieving Eels could be beaten by a staggering 40 points against Manly at Brookvale Oval this Friday night.

And the desperate Eels may have to face the high-flying Sea Eagles without star five-eighth Feleti Mateo, who could be out for six to eight weeks with a knee injury.

Parramatta's season is slipping away with a loss to Manly another gut-wrenching setback to their finals hopes.

The Eels were humbled 32-20 by Souths on Saturday night at Homebush and remain outside the top eight.

After pushing Melbourne right to the end in last year's grand final qualifier, Parramatta are the great disappointments of 2008, having won just seven of 16 matches.

Mateo will have MRI scans today but Parramatta are bracing themselves for a stint without the creative ball-player, who is also battling an ankle injury.

"On current form we could be beaten by 40 against Manly," Fitzgerald told The Daily Telegraph.

"Things are getting very tough for us. We have to stand up against Manly this Friday night.

"But things don't look good. And it could be difficult without Feleti Mateo."

Fitzgerald emphasised that coach Michael Hagan's position was safe but said everyone at the club had to accept responsibility for the miserable season. "Michael will handle it," Fitzgerald said.

"He's been through the good times and the bad times before with Newcastle. It was a bit the same last year with us.

"We started last year poorly but rattled home to make the finals."

After Manly, Parramatta play North Queensland and Newcastle - two games they will be confident of winning.

"We're certainly not resigned to missing the finals," Fitzgerald said.

"We are aiming for a top-eight spot and that starts with the game against Manly."

Parramatta forward Nathan Hindmarsh could be charged by the NRL match review committee today for a high tackle on Souths' halfback Chris Sandow.

Eels skipper Nathan Cayless missed Saturday night's match with an infected shin but should return for the Sea Eagles match.

"No one is pointing any fingers," Fitzgerald said. "We are all in this together.

"We just aren't going well and we aren't jelling. We are all accepting responsibility.

"We aren't far outside the top eight. A couple of wins in coming weeks will change everything."

Manly showed they are true contenders with a crushing victory over Cronulla at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.

Danger game, with a capital D!!! You know it's almost the last roll of the dice when a chief exec predicts a thrashing against their own team. If we are down just a little, we will be in a bit of strife

Parramatta club doctor Michael Johnson said the length of Mateo's absence depended on how well he reacted to treatment.

"It's just going to depend on speed of recovery," Johnson said. "If Feleti's lucky, he'll only miss the one game, or it'll be two."

Johnson said Eels prop Josh Cordoba, who has an abdominal strain, and halfback Brett Finch (hamstring strain) would be fit to play Manly. He said prop Fuifui Moimoi's corked knee would be checked tomorrow.

Manly interchange forward Mark Bryant is in doubt, although coach Des Hasler would not specify the nature of the injury. Glenn Hall is on standby.
