Nathan Brown in tug of war between rivals Melbourne and Manly

Manly could miss out on the services of Nathan Brown after arch rivals Melbourne became a contender for his signature.

Brown will return to Australia after guiding St Helens to a Super League premiership in the English decider against Wigan at Old Trafford.

The former Dragons coach and hooker is hopeful of resuming his career in the NRL and has been sounded out about an assistant's role to Geoff Toovey at the Sea Eagles.

However, the Storm are also keen to boost their coaching stocks as they prepare for a succession plan for Craig Bellamy. The premiership-winning coach has been in charge at Melbourne since 2003 and established himself as one of league's best modern-day clipboard holders.

The 55-year-old is contracted to the Storm until the end of 2016, although it's understood he has an option to stay on should he choose to do so.

However, Bellamy has indicated he will likely finish up his coaching career in two years time in a move which would leave a huge hole at the club.

Storm powerbrokers are already drawing up succession plans and view Brown as a man capable of taking over at the appropriate time.

The development could result in a tug of war between Manly and Melbourne, bitter rivals who have been the dominant NRL outfits over the past decade.

There has been speculation the Sea Eagles could also make a play for Brad Arthur, who was an assistant to Toovey last year. However, Arthur has all but agreed to a contract extension which will keep him at Parramatta until the end of 2017.

Brown shifted to England after a six-year coaching stint at St George Illawarra, joining Huddersfield in 2009 before switching to the Saints two years ago.

This month he found the premiership success that had long eluded him as a player and coach at the Red V.

The Storm have a history of identifying and nurturing quality coaching talent. Stephen Kearney, Brad Arthur and Michael Maguire have all become NRL head coaches, Maguire piloting South Sydney to their 21st premiership following a 43-year drought.

Wests Tigers assistant David Kidwell is another promising young coach who has come through the Storm system.

It's hoped Brown would be the man to help the club transition as Bellamy and senior players Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk edge towards their twilight years.

However, there would also be appeal for Brown – who was interviewed for the Tigers job which went to Jason Taylor – at Manly, a club which would also allow him to relocate his young family in Sydney.

The bloodletting at Manly is likely to continue after general manager David Perry was told he isn't wanted by the club's new ownership regime.
