SELLING the naming rights to Brookvale Oval is again on the agenda as a way of funding an upgrade of the ageing venue

Warringah Council has recommended selling the naming rights be explored among a range of options. to meet the future needs of the ground.

Warringah councillors were last night due to vote on whether to accept the recommendations.

Warringah ratepayers contribute $200,000 to maintaining Brookvale Oval.

However, if the Manly Sea Eagles' lobbying for a $30 million grandstand was to succeed, the council's costs could increase to $300,000.

The council's report, Securing The Future of Brookvale Oval, includes recommendations such as asking the State Government to put the oval into a state-sponsored trust and provide more funding.

Mayor Michael Regan said if the State Government agreed, options like the renaming might need not need to be explored.

However the Government has previously argued against funding suburban grounds.

Brookvale Oval committee chairman Kerry Sibraa said he was open to selling the rights as long as "Brookvale'' remained in the name.

The naming rights prospect was floated in 2010 and 2008 but was unsuccessful.

Look, pretty well every serious venue has a sponsors name on it. Suncorp Stadium hasn't been called Lang Park for years now. It is the way to go for all major event venues. Look at Etihad Stadium? I don't even know what it was called prior to this.

If the powers to be can help turn Brookvale Oval into a mega venue via a name change to Kaspersky Stadium or something, then do it!

There is no need to have "Brookvale" in the naming, that just restricts the value of naming rights. Everyone knows where the oval is, there is no advantage here.

The only problem I can see if there is a Sponsor change, and therefore a stadium name change. Perhaps they should restrict the sponsorship to a minimum of 5 year periods before a new stadium name change can happen?

I think the oval naming rights should be separate to the major sponsorship of the Sea Eagles. Kaspersky needs to save their money to pay us more for the major sponsorship!! Ideally there would be a minimum commitment by the sponsor of at least 5 years, because we don't want the name of the ground changing too often.

Maybe make it Brokeback fortress, full of single guys on a hill getting very excited next to a guy banging his drum. :p

Would help and seriously negate the only negative council come up with - cost of maintenance and therefore reduce our cost of hire

I have no issues with brookie oval being renamed if the trade off is a continuation of playing there long term

I agree. It will forever be known as the Fortress anyway, and those with nostalgia can always refer to it as Brookie. The $'s for our long-term survival are more important.

Thats right crusher.I still refer to going to olympic park, sfs.penrith park etc.The sponsor's name means nothing to me.It'll always be Brookie.

Eagle Boys Oval has a nice sound to it.

Global eagle it was always going to be only ten million.

Scott Penn said at the awards night they are hopeful that $10mil from Abbott and $10mil from Krud means $20mil.

Here's an idea lets call it Vatican stadium and fill the hill up with self righteous closet pedos priests who worship a pretend god ;)

I knew I heard something like that somewhere - thanks. But I also thought the Labor promise was in fact contingent on something or other.

Viagra sponsorship?

On topic.... I agree, I don't mind if naming the stadium keeps games at brookie and gets Manly more $$$$. The fact it isn't named is probably an anomaly in professional sports stadium land.

"GE's hat stadium" - The only cap the nrl players like.
