With goal kicking such a problem at the club this year, I thought I'd do some research and find a list of Manly's goal kickers who have kicked at least 10 goals for the club since records of both successful kicks and kick attempts have been kept (roughly 1986).

Starting from 1986 and going through until 2015, the list is (Note: Only goals kicked/attempted for Manly shown, not full career stats):

Mal Cochrane - 152 / 231 (65.80%)
Michael O'Connor - 180 / 270 (66.67%)
Ian Gately - 10 / 12 (83.33%)
Matthew Ridge - 477 / 599 (79.63%)
Ivan Cleary - 50 / 71 (70.42%)
Shannon Nevin - 52 / 83 (62.65%)
Craig innes - 11 / 17 (64.71%)
Craig Field - 44 / 86 (51.16%)
Luke Phillips - 50 / 83 (60.24%)
Adam Brown - 38 / 52 (73.08%)
Brendon Reeves - 14 / 24 (58.33%)
Ben Walker - 59 / 76 (77.63%)
Luke Williamson - 40 / 57 (70.18%)
Andrew Walker - 80 / 103 (77.67%)
Michael Witt - 62 / 78 (79.49%)
Travis Burns - 17 / 22 (77.27%)
Steve Matai - 21 / 36 (58.33%)
Matt Orford - 242 / 338 (71.60%)
Jamie Lyon - 441 / 597 (73.87%)
Daly Cherry-Evans - 28 / 50 (56.00%)

Clearly our best ever kicker has been Matthew Ridge, even if you count other kickers from before the kicks/attempts records were kept such as Graham Eadie, Bob Batty, Ron Willey and Ron Rowles. Our worst was Craig Field (he should be in gaol just for impersonating a first grade goal kicker, or player for that matter, let alone what else he's done. What was Bozo thinking when he signed him???).

From memory, Mal Cochrane and Ian Gately the only ones on the list who kicked in the older toe poke style.

Killer has actually kicked 6/6 this year, but he's injured now. Our backup kickers, DCE and Skivy have combined to kick 0/4 so far this year. And with Killer injured, even if he does play he probably won't be able to kick with a suspect groin, one or both need to improve dramatically or we are going to lose more games.

Joey was a handy goal kicker. You would think Tooves would get him to take DCE, Matai, and one or two others aside and give them a few lessons.

Apparently DCE and Matai kick really well at training, but obviously get the yipes during games.

And with Skivy that surprises me because I remember him converting Robbo's third try from the sideline in the 2008 GF. It never looked like missing.

But then I remember how he kicked in Melbourne last year. I thought they'd put an image of Skivy over Brett Kimmorley kicking, they were that bad.

I don't know why DCE seems so hit and miss in games. That one he missed from almost in front against the Dogs was a shocker (as was Skivy hitting the post). DCE was supposed to be our first choice kicker in 2011 and Killer was happy to give him the job. Problem is he only kicked 25/40 (62.5%) before Killer was forced to take the job again.

You know, if Daly could sort out his match goal kicking woes he could be worth every bit that the Tits (NRL) are going to pay him.

Matai has the best style of kicking and I am surprised he didn't take over as our primary years ago. I guess there is a mental factor and injury factor to factor in as well, in fact i'm sure there is.

Guthbo is a good kicker and would have taken over duties if not injured.

Now that Jamie is injured we need a goal kicker . Maybe Kelly can sign someone from Chelsea

Why can't Ridgey fly in and give Snake some tutorials ? Snake has the temperament - surely his knees would not be strained by place kicks ?

Shane Rodney was a handy backup kicker too when he was with us
16/20 (80.00%)

Robbo didn't kick 10 goals in his Manly career.

Judging by that kick though he could have been a handy back up. Who knew?
