Recover? As recently as late last season we were runaway leaders and comp favourites. The 're-build' has been going on for the last 3 years, and still we are serious challengers. Our club has been the best at transitioning which is why we have played the most consecutive finals. Salary cap makes it tricky but there's no sign we aren't always taking a long-term view as well as challenging every year.

Our squad is awesome and in no way comparable to the NE days. We will kill it this year. Watch Vave have a huge year.

Kite, Gifty, King, and Choc great manly men, but if they were all still in our forward pack come 2016 now that would have definitely been in a retirement / rebuilding phase. The club made some tough calls, but when you can look at our squad and still see stacks of experience, and a great crop of young experienced kids on the up. I will be surprized if 2015 is a rebuilding phase.

Our football department , recruitment and back office management team are way smarter than they were in the late 1990's.

The rebuilding has been happening constantly, the letting go of players like Kite is a perfect example .

The possible letting go of Skivvy, and the impending retirement of Killer and the " maybe" signing of only one of the halves suggest to me that we will see a couple of big name signings for the club in the next year or two, a forward and a back.

Remember we built this great team around Kite / Lyon and then Orford.

We will be fine. In those periods you mention we didn't have gun juniors coming through like we do now.

Thought I've replied to this but it disappeared?
De$ didn't play for Manly again after 1996 (he got a free ride into the grand final from Bozo).
In 97, he played one season for West then retired after that.
Glad I didn't buy his tribute jersey nor his cruddy book.
