Was it just me or did Fatty and Co go into PR 'overdrive' last night in an attempt to rescue the image of Andrew Johns? (They forgot to say who employs him - Channel 9.) Talk about media spin.

I don't normally watch it these days but happened to get that segment. After the Joey they talked about I thought that he was going to get a knighthood, the Nobel Peace Prize or a special spot in the Mother Theresa Hall of Fame.

The old "I've played golf with him and never heard him be racist!' spin was pretty shallow.

How he has come to be a media personality despite his many 'incidents' including drug use (despite the knowledge of his club and NSWRL officials etc) is a blight on the game.

I use to think he was the best player I had every seen until I heard about the drugs and then I started to wonder what he would be like without them.

Now I know, a racist.  ;D

They are his mates, did you expect them to stick the knife in?

I dont condone what he said at all but I understand how it happened and I can see why his mates stuck up for him.

I just love the way that people say "I know him, he's a good bloke, and he's definitely not a racist" straight after they make racist comments.

Probably even better as the drugs he was taking were by no means performance enhancing.

I know I have been guilty of saying something similar to what Johns said in the past and I do not think I am racist.  I would employ a coloured person, I would stop to help a coloured person, I would and do socialise and have coloured people as friends etc.  If I would not do any of that then yes I would say I am a racist.

I think alot of Australians will call people names based on identifable features, it might be fat, red head etc.  Black is obviously viewed as being much worse due to the more severe forms of racism in society and nowdays saying anything about a minority is a no go as it is very politically incorrect.

Basically what Joey said was wrong but it does not automatically mean he is racist imo.  Go ahead and tear me to bits!!!!

Totally agree Garts, have said very similar to Joey whilst playing football myself, also said get the fat red headed pr**k, smash that fat ars**hole etc etc.

2 of my children are also adopted from Sri Lanka & are very very dark, don't hear too many people calling me a racist

Applause for honesty and making sense!! I hate the way that the media works where it is sensationalise and polarise on issues. (Where is that clapping emoticon?)

I love black people too......Really Pete, you shouldn't be referring to people as fat, old, black, yellow or any such description, wherever and under any sort of conditions.  What sort of message is that sending to the next generation, your kids included.  Just play the game hard and clean.  leave the disparaging remarks to the Johns boys, or Gallen and his lot.  And Garts, if you refer to peoples skin colour in a disparaging way, like Johns, then you are a racist, whether you like it or not.

Canteen, off to an inservice for you.  The media haven't been 'polarized' on this issue, racisms been condemned, that's all.  And so it should be.

But could he what he was doing????

I think everyone is probably guilty of prejudice based on racial stereotypes. These stereotypes aren't just invented, they have some basis of truth to them otherwise they wouldn't have come into existence. However, where it crosses the line into racism in my opinion is if you can't get past your pre-judgement.

They do.

DSM5 - before you stereotype me too much, I was born in Moree, played League in the North West for many years, had a mum who worked in an Aboriginal pre-school and a father who was a regular visitor to Villawood detention centre. The issues related to race are extremely complex and not the simplified issue that some in the media would suggest. That said, Johns was an idiot in what he said.

Fro - yep - inservice courses take place = both as school development days (often at the start of the year) - we have 7 or 8 in the school holidays, but also we are required to attend a certain amount of training in everything from OH&S, pedagogy, Resuscitation, National Curriculum develpment as well as various courses on subject specifics, not to mention Mental Health and pastoral care and welfare matters. (Boring answer I know)
