Well it looks like the days of Orford dribbling the ball 25 metres from goal line drop-outs are over.  Just had the ball to George Rose and let him kick it the 80 metres it took to win the Props' Pentathlon.

I missed it . was the gale force wind behind him

and he apparently shanked all his practice kicks, with none going more than 20m. Ox can at least kick them 25m regularly.

That's part of my rationale.  George's shanks are nearly the equal of Orford's best.  No actually, we're a better chance of recovering a 20 metre shank than a dribbler into no mans' land.

I am not convinced that the 50m on the fly drop kick gives a signifigantly better result than one of Ox's 35m along the ground dribblers.

For some obscure reason I always note where a player is tackled on line drop out return. Inevitably it is always very close to the 30m line, regardless of the length and quality of the line drop out.

The problem is Orford's don't make the thirty metre line, so there goes your excuse for giving him the drop outs Corso and Dan.  I put it to Hasler two years ago that we should develop specialist kickers in the squad.  Made no impact.  At least Lyon takes the side-line kicks, when he's on the field.

The thing is whenever ive been to games this year Orford in warmup kicks the ball from for bombs near the post so the fullback can get practice. Then in game he struggles the 30 or 40 mtrs on the bounce some kicks.

It has to be coached for him to find the dirt, whether it gives up 20 mtrs or not.

I paid close attention to this over the weekend and I believe in the main you're right.  There was one dribbler from Orford today though (with the wind) that they got back to 25 on the 1st though.

In the second half Orford kicked one 50 into the breeze.  bizarre.

Interestingly he kicked a few drop outs today that were kicked along the ground and then bounced over the players on the 35 to get back to the 50. Seemed a deliberate ploy. The third one bounced up and wasn't as effective.

A ball dribbling at someones feet is a lot harder to catch than 1 that goes 50m on the fly, is why I don't have a big issue with Orford's dropouts

As the other poster said, the end result is generally within 5m of the point of contact whichever way you go

I'm sure Orford didn't deliberately dribble the ball along the ground, it just happened.  Mistimed kicks imo.  5 metres is a long way in this game of millimetres.  They guy should just give up his dropouts to someone who can.
