Week 1

    * 1st Qualifying Final: 1st vs 8th
    * 2nd Qualifying Final: 2nd vs 7th
    * 3rd Qualifying Final: 3rd vs 6th
    * 4th Qualifying Final: 4th vs 5th

The teams are then ranked depending on whether they won or lost, then on their position on the ladder before the finals.

The two lowest ranked losers are eliminated from the finals, whilst the two highest ranked winners progress straight to Week 3.

Week 2

    * 1st Semi Final: 4th highest ranked winner vs 2nd highest ranked loser
    * 2nd Semi Final: 3rd highest ranked winner vs 1st highest ranked loser

The two losing teams are eliminated, the two winning teams progress to Week 3.

Week 3

    * 1st Preliminary Final: 2nd highest ranked winner (from Week 1) vs winner of 2nd Semi Final
    * 2nd Preliminary Final: 1st highest ranked winner (from Week 1) vs winner of 1st Semi Final

The two losing teams are eliminated, the two winning teams progress to Week Four.

Week 4

    * Grand Final: winner of 1st Preliminary Final vs winner of 2nd Preliminary Final

Does anyone like the McIntyre Final Eight System.? Is a top eight to much for a sixteen team comp? All would a top six be better than the current format thoughts ?

I prefer the old final 5 system

The AFL system is better. 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3, 5 plays 8 and 6 plays 7. Top four cannot be eliminated in the first week and get a week off if they win. Bottom four is elimination.

It rewards the top 4 and gives more credence to the minor premiership.

That sounds a lot better than the current "McIntyre" Final Eight System.

Yes but that system also punishes the 3rd and 4th sides for doing well all season and rewards the strugglers who finish 7th and 8th.

3 and 4 have to play 1 and 2 while the teams who finished 7th and 8th only have to front up against the 5th and 6th sides.

I liked the final 5

It is ridiculous that Half of the entire league get to go to the finals.

We should cut it to a final 7 and bring back the same rules as final 5, o just cut it back to final 5 even.

That way we get a longer normal season where all teams play each other twice!

I disagree Doug. 3 and 4 can get a week off if they beat the top two sides. They also cannot get eliminated in the first week, yet under the Mcintyre system this is possible. Also should they lose the first week they play at home for the second week. The pressure is then on the bottom four sides as they are in elimination mode and the teams rewarded are those that did well in the minor premiership.

True.

I personally dont believe a side that loses more games than win should be able qualify for finals, however this does happen with a top 8 system.

The McIntytre system is stupid for a number of reasons.

1. The teams that play each other are not always playing for the same 'prize',  For example 1 v 8, 1 gets the week off, 8 stays in the comp.

2. For 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 there is no clear outcome for the game as it depends on other results.

3. It is actually possible that losing a finals game could be an advantage.  In the 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 matches a loss might see you playing team 5 or 6 instead of 3 or 4 in week 2.

4.  It's possible to stumble into 6th place, get towelled up in week one of the finals, and still only need 2 wins to make the grand final.
