Y' know,
I cant help but think that there is a method to the NRL's madness...
Since '99 or 2000, Fox has arrogantly thought that they owned the game. Can you imagine the scene where Fox wanders into the NRL whenever it wants and says "this is how it's going to be"!
Now, in one fell swoop, they have put Fox in it's place, and that is on the outside looking in! So what if Nine has more games. there are infinitely more people watching games on FTA then on the rip-off that is FOX. Fox isn't acting out of an altruistic rush to the head. They just wants to be richer - to the tune of $50+ per month per box.
Well done NRL and Dave Smith.

For those who don't understand the role of a CEO, a CEO reports to a board.
The board makes policy - the CEO carries it out. Just like Joe does back at the ranch. Seems like the board has said that they want our game back. Note that Dave Smith is only the messenger here!

Who knows, maybe nine could make an NRL only channel out of it's bandwidth allocation...

Let's go back to NRL with just Sydney teams like it was before.

like when it wasn't a 'product'. the bs that they come out with now on tv, especially around state of origin, the media luvvie players like SBW etc. is sickening and turns people away.
it's all a sideshow now. there's even tv ads on the screen at brookie ffs.. you just cannot escape. advertising wherever you turn. It was a working man's game and there's too many spivs just making money from it now. Brookie oval one of the great suburban grounds, other teams supporters like going there and there's talk of less games... clueless . Look when the dogs play out of Belmore or Tigers at Leichhardt.. people actually go. then they carp on about it like it's some masterstroke by the suits in charge. They can't get their heads around that people don't want to go all the way to Homebush on a Friday night through traffic. More tv viewers in the short term maybe but it won't last.

NRL rebellion: Rugby league clubs want CEO Dave Smith gone or threaten to leave competition

SOME of the most powerful figures in rugby league have floated the idea of a breakaway 12-team competition in a bid to oust NRL CEO Dave Smith.

Last week’s TV negotiations, which saw Fox Sports and Telstra cut out of the deal, is the latest in a growing list of frustrations they have with Mr Smith and Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman John Grant.

The new competition would be made up by the 12 clubs, whose NRL participation agreements end at the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Of those 12, four are leading the rebel league discussions with the goal of getting Mr Smith and Mr Grant torpedoed out of office.

Under the radical proposal the four clubs currently being propped up by the NRL – Wests Tigers, St George Illawarra, Newcastle and Gold Coast – would be left out of the new competition.

The push has been discussed among some of the most influential figures in rugby league who remain furious at a range of NRL decisions, including cutting key stakeholders Fox Sports and Telstra out of the TV negotiations.

Their anger was intensified after News Corp and the Seven Network partnered to give the AFL a record $2.5 billion television deal.

The inconsistencies from the NRL match review committee and the judiciary in relation to the shoulder charges are also a key concern of the powerbrokers, as well as the multi-million dollar blow-out of executive salaries and the number of staff employed since Smith was appointed at the start of 2013.

An email sent last week detailing how the 12-team breakaway competition would be structured, with the prospect of additional teams being added in Brisbane and Perth to make a 14-team competition.

In order for the NRL clubs to pass a vote of no-confidence in the ARL Commission they need a 75 per cent vote from the 16 existing clubs. The breakaway scenario remains highly unlikely but illustrates the current level of discontent with the NRL head office.

And so it continues

News get shafted = NRL in "crisis" coverage

Its a bit like that isn't it.

Though if the rumours I have read are true and that the NRL only really negotiated with Nein while ignoring Seven and Ten plus cutting Fox out of the picture.....then Smith and co. do have a lot to answer for.

The NRL signed a deal with Nein for $925 million. It all sounded great.....until it emerged that they had virtually ignored Foxtel who then a week later signed a $2.5 billion dollar deal with the AFL - a deal worth more than 2.5 times what the NRL's is. It was then that the folly of the leagues decision to only deal with Nein was exposed. Really, when dealing with only one entity for a broadcast deal its going to lead to a situation where the bidder can virtually name their own price and you end up with what's best for the bidder, in this case Nein. Rugby league got short changed in a big way by the very people who run the game here in Australia.

And take it from someone who lives in an AFL dominated town......the AFL are laughing all the way to the bank. And they'll continue laughing as the NRL keeps shooting itself in the foot.

Smith has just made a monumental fark up with negotiations and potentially put the NRL brand at great risk of losing momentum. Now he must be punished. Bring in the Spanish Inquisition.
Public stoning of Smith and Zorba ....

The NRL/NINE deal is only for 4 games on free to air, and origin etc.

There are still 4 games a week to sell, as well as a potential 5th game with expansion.

Also fox will want the simulcast rights to all games live, just like the AFL.

Not even a peep about this in rival media it seems. Just news ltd throwing there weight around. The more noise they make , probably the better he is done. If he is making it hard for them he is doing good for rugby league. How many rule changes were stamped by the previous under selling manangement. Its bee going on for over a decade

Smith has made a mortal enemy as Uncy Rupert has the Tom tits with him big time, this talk of a breakaway competition I suspect is news limited bluster and it was peddled by Kent a couple of months ago.

The NRL does need News limited and News needs the NRL this is just chest beating from both sides until common sense prevails.

Don't blame Smith for this. Look further up the food chain.
The NRL will get Fox, and Fox will get some NRL. Just the rules will be different.
As others have posted ad nauseum, Fox will lose customers big time without NRL.
Surely no one on this forum wants the evil empire to call the shots again.
Some of you must have short memories.

I totally agree. The last thing we need is for news filth to have it all their own way. The competition is not even while they own one club and have influence in others.

When you want to sell something for maximum dollars you make sure its in the best condition it can be...
Unfortunately under Smiths watch the game is in a poor rundown condition. Crowds down, fans disillusioned with the dopes that adjudicate on the games direction, the salary cap is a joke and being rorted and the refereeing at an all time low.

Maybe, but have we replaced one evil empire with another (9)? At least FOX brought professional coverage in HD and quality NRL shows (IMO). Channel 9 brings sh*t definition, annoying commentators, and the worst NRL shows known to man.

To each, his own.

Surprise surprise. Spurned criminal organisation screams 'code in crisis' a week after losing exclusive rights to own, dictate, and privatise the game for profit. Twenty years after they almost totally wrecked the game so that Rupert could have 'product' to sell on his new pay TV channel. This is a viscous ugly organisation that will stoop to any level to get what it wants. The hysterical rothfield guff in the Tele this morning would be funny if it wasn't so serious. Smith is a brave man to take these thugs on.

I think the banker running the NRL is doing a great job.
( keeping Greenberg in a job not included)
