Special mention to Crusher Cleal who deserves more credit for his input to Manlys recent success. Many players have magnetically jumped on the Seaeagles steamtrain courtesy of the big unit & been very influential to our winning formula. Imo the crusher is pivotal in all that is good for the club, especially his ability with young talent & he may well be harder to replace than anyone. Players come & go, coaches the same, though Des is something special, but scouts with this much vision & national contacts in the right places are a 1 off........

Crusher and Des the dynamic duo. One finds players with potential and the other brings out the best in them and turns them in to stars. This saves our club a lot money as we dont have to pay overs like other teams such as the dogs and parra . Des and Crusher are a great investment .

Crusher is a hero. A true legend in league circles. His input and contribution to Manly's success is unquestionable and impossible to calculate. He can spot emerging talent like no other.

I have nothing but admiration for the job Des has done - I am not jumping off cliffs regarding the coaching role & to be honest I think we would lose little if anything with Geoff Toovey taking over. The worst story I fear breaking is the loss of Crusher Cleal -have no doubt - he is the irreplacable one.

Your right and now that we know Des has announced he is leaving and the Dogs recruitment officer has gone to the Knights , will he be lured also ?

You have to wonder how long ago this deal was done with the dogs clearing the decks

Crusher does an excellent job, but parts of the recruitment game are overrated. Its not so much having the eye for talent (eg Peter O'Sullivan the former Storm and now Roosters recruitment manager getting wraps for discovering Greg Inglis, please. What a genius to try and sign the 14 year old kid who is twice as big and fast as everyone in his age group). The key is what you do with them once you get them. Its creating an environment where the players are able to constantly improve. A lot of our recruitment success stories aren't really good spots per say, they were about who we could afford and just giving guys an opportunity. Robbo's a perfect example of that. Guys like Ballin made first contact with the club just looking for an opportunity.

Sure there is an art it spotting some of the lesser knowns but its about what you're getting them into. Guys like Matai wouldn't have been half the player he was if he tried his luck at the Raiders or Eels, for example.

If Crusher has gone as well, its disappointing but foundations have been layed already and we just need to continue on with the good work rather than just trying to start from scratch again.

Agree with much of this Masked but the thing is we dont just lose big Crusher but also many extra scouts he has posted here, there & everywhere. Crusher definately has a way with making the kids welcome but his work is at 3rd base after he has been informed of their potential. 1st & 2nd base is numerous talent scouts that will continue to work for Crusher regardless of what club he is at.
