I think the saddest thing about politics today and watching the tv wrap ups is that the only area that is of interest to anyone interviewed is what they got out of it. I am disapponted because as a nation we have a lot of problems that don't get tackled.

The principle one is health care. If any area needs a huge injection this is the one. I have spent nearly 30 hrs in hospitals in the last week helping someone for a fractured hand, for what should have taken about 5 hours all up. Just not enough staff to go around.

The initiative to clean up the Murray is a good one and the Libs deserve kudos, but deep down I am cynical and wonder how many rice farming mates are being hurt. Anyway, health, projects like the Murray, education (so we are ahead of other countries in the region), transport infrastructure are where I would like to see things done. I don't know of anyone starving in Australia and a few dollars in tax cuts really do not improve quality of life like these main areas.

By the time the rich get looked after in the second phace due next year this is how the income tax has changed under howard.

$25,000pa: 1995 $4522, 2008 $3,230 = -5.17%
$50,000pa: 1995 $14102, 2008 $10,080 = -8.04%
$100,000pa: 1995 $37602, 2008 $26,080 = -11.52%
$200,000pa: 1995 $84,602, 2008 $62,080 = -11.26%

I wonder which end of town he has been looking after?

Low income earners might be appear 5% better off but they have been slugged with a GST of 10% on most items so they are really worse off.

So since Howard came in he has reduced personal income tax, I thought he was the highest taxing government ever ;)

Of course the people that pay a higher rate of tax will get a greater chunk back, thats life. The highest tax bracket was way too high so when it gets reduced of course the higher income earners will benefit.

This year is the first time anything has gone towards climate change and even then it was really a token effort compared to the costs on the economy if things dont change soon. I wonder how many more global independant reports will be ignored, the last one consisted of views from a miserly 2000 or so scientists from around 50 countries and was dumbed down before its realease.

Yeah I know, must say I was expecting a better response than that
:p

Sales tax was also abolished in 2000 when GST was introduced, although I understand that would not have covered the impact of the GST.

tbh I did not notice my cost of living increase when GST came into effect, probably been assisted by the tax cuts.

My issue is how the money is spent more than how much the higer income earners are taxed compared to the lower income earners.
