Manly winger David Williams has capped a fantastic rise to be named in Australia's World Cup squad, alongside five other Sea Eagles stars.

Sea Eagles halfback Matt Orford missed the squad, with Johnathan Thurston and Scott Prince the two halfbacks named, but Orford's teammates Brent Kite, Josh Perry, Brett Stewart, Glenn Stewart, Anthony Watmough and Williams were all picked.

Storm back-rower Michael Crocker was selected despite departing the NRL for the English Super League next year, while Canberra duo Terry Campese and Joel Monaghan were rewarded for their strong form this season.

The full Kangaroos squad
Fullbacks: Billy Slater (Storm), Brett Stewart (Sea Eagles)
Outside backs: Israel Folau (Storm), Justin Hodges (Broncos), Greg Inglis (Storm), Joel Monaghan (Raiders), Brent Tate (Warriors), David Williams (Sea Eagles)
Halves: Terry Campese (Raiders), Darren Lockyer (Broncos), Scott Prince (Titans), Johnathan Thurston (Cowboys)
Hooker: Cameron Smith (Storm)
Back-rowers: Michael Crocker (Storm), Craig Fitzgibbon (Roosters), Paul Gallen (Sharks), Anthony Laffranchi (Titans), Glenn Stewart (Sea Eagles), Anthony Watmough (Sea Eagles)
Front-rowers: Petero Civoniceva (Panthers), Brent Kite (Sea Eagles), Josh Perry (Sea Eagles), Steve Price (Warriors)
Utility: Kurt Gidley (Knights)

Well done to all the debutants!

A few questionable selections but still a strong side

being unbiased i would not be surprised to see most of our manly players other than G Stewart benched. eg Kite Perry & Choc on the bench with Gidley as a utility. Williams i dont think will crack the backs and the media is slater's bitch so i cant see b stewart cracking through.

Missing_something the reason why there are 4 props and 6 backs is that they simply have the double amount of players per position. eg there are 2 prop positions therefore 4 props selected. same with back rowers including the lock position.

Yes I know this but not every player tends to play in every match and they've tended in the past to have multiple teams, I guess it comes down to how they work the playing roster and rotation.

That is a very unbalanced squad - particularly the selection of only one hooker for the campaign.  It's also staggering that Lyon and to a lesser extent Orford do not feature.

As for the selection of Zitzgibbon - did the selectors not watch the Origin.  If they need an old and over rated plodder they could at least have selected a specialist for the job description - Hindmarsh.

I reckon the kiwi's size is really going to trouble that team.

Will our blokes sober up in time for the WC?

How good a year has it been for Williams.  Crusher and des will have every Parra junior calling them for a contract with us.

Fitzgibbon, Crocker, Gallen.  Three blind old men.  They've given nothing over the last month of games.  Poor selections.  Robbo must be playing for Scotland.  He would have been before Wolfie for mine.  Good backline if they can jell.  Choc and Stewie must get the run on.

The beard got Williams the run ahead of Robo I would say.  (I'm serious - it's called good marketing).

The Beard is gone!

Lyon isn't interested in Rep footy.
He has a family, and whats to spend time with them.

Surprised they went with Crocker, given Stuart's line of not picking people deserting the NRL.  And how they call him a match winner is beyond me - he didn't do much at win the GF now did he.

Congrats to the boys selected.  I think Orford's too old to feature in the plans now at age 30 which is a shame.  Then again they went and got Fitzgibbon so what gives, selectors?

My thoughts are they'll all get a run during the WC, but in the big finals games we'll only see Kite and maybe one or two others selected.  Choc or G Stewart probably.  Petero and Price alaong with Kite have 3 prop shots, Slater in the no 1, Williams maybe...

I understand that, but my refrence is to the entire season.  Robo shouldn't have shaved his off.

i think lyon got sick of picking up the paper and reading how he wasn't worth origin. Then he realised when looking down at his kids and thinking, yeah there is more important things is life. Picking cooper over him was joke to begin with and it would have stung a bit. As it was they are on par with each in defense and JL is 100% better in attack. His kicking game as seen in the finals should get him in the squad next year (if he wanted it). NSW didn't have 2 kickers and it did end up hurting them.

Kite should be the run on front rower with Petero come off the bench, i think that would be a massive pack. Glen stewart should start. And perry should rotate in and out with the big three. Choc, well i don't he will get much game time unless stuart wants him runnning constantly outside of Lockyer.

Playing a team like NZ i would be worried about the centre of the ruck and the slowness of the non-manly players if i could be any less bias. Kite, quick for a frontrower, Stewart covers good ground for a fat man. Fitzo is a slouch now. Petero and Price are getting on, though price still looks fit he has lost a yard of pace. Gallen can't tackle to begin with. Well we saw cocker in the GF so i need say no more

they will probably use Gidley at hooker if ther is a problem with Cam Smith. so you could say they have 2 hookers.

Also on David Williams i think it is also very smart semi marketing yourself. If you want to be popular somewhat you have to stand out from the rest, so how he does it is :

a. he has / had a big beard amongst a lot of clean skins (sure its shaven now but i bet it will all grow back in time for the new season)
b. he is a winger a back who hits the defensive line like a prop.
c. A tad eccentric

Not taking anything away from his talent its just you have to make the most of the time & money while you are able to play in the nrl.
