SEA Eagles godfather Ken Arthurson has backed the club using their war chest to chase star Sam Burgess and Todd Carney after confirmation yesterday that Kieran Foran will join Parramatta next season.

The star five-eight informed his teammates of his decision yesterday morning at the club’s Narrabeen headquarters.
“I think Manly should be moving very quickly,” Arthurson told the Manly Daily.
“I have read there is a chance of Sam Burgess coming, well I would be certainly jumping on a plane and grabbing him if I could.”
That could be a similar scenario to the time Arthurson pulled off one of the biggest coups in Manly history when he signed English forward Mal Reilly in 1971.
“They were all chasing him, I just didn’t tell anyone, I jumped on a plane and went over and signed him up and no one knew I was gone,” Arthurson said.
“Whatever’s got to be done, just do it.”
Arthurson, recognised as one of rugby league’s most astute ever administrators, rates Carney as a really top-line player.
“They wouldn’t lose if they had him at five-eighth, I’ll tell you that,” he said.
Carney has been linked to Manly and is currently playing in France after he was banished from the NRL after a number of indiscretions.
But Arthurson has no doubt that Manly could keep him in line.
You can discipline anyone, you really can and (CEO) Joe Kelly would certainly be able to discipline him,” he said.
“And in the light of things what’s happened he would be disciplined himself anyway.
“I’ve had players come to Manly over the years with unbelievably bad reputations but when the law was laid down they respond and they always have with Manly.”
Kelly was already looking ahead to the future following confirmation that Foran would follow halfback Daly Cherry-Evans out of the club at the end of this season.
“The club is now in a position of having the resources necessary to recruit some of the best talent in the marketplace, to ensure that the Sea Eagles remain a dominant team in the NRL,” he said.
Arthurson was both surprised and disappointed that Foran was leaving Manly.
“I know he has some close friends in the club here and at the end of the day I thought that would have influenced him,” he said.
“And I think he would have been aware that one day he would be taking over the leadership role at Manly.”

Maybe the club should tell everyone we are recruiting from within....so all the slimebag managers out there stop rubbing their claws together with glee thinking they can get overs for even the most basic of players.

Then we can sign them up.

This may apply more to the elgey's than the sam burgesseses though. (If sam even wants to come back out here)

Arko knows Manly must make a statement of intent after the recent upheaval. I would like to see them take their time and really consider who we need. If Sam Burgess was available it would be smart to target him and that would wipe the smile off the vermins face. We should also target some experience at least 1 half and a front rower with quality to teach the youngsters in the team.

JWH, Burgess or Burgesses - however many we can get, and Maloney.

Is there some sort of dickhead quota I wasn't aware of? Finally Watmough is not our problem anymore. Come on Manly please don't just go out and get an even bigger idiot. Sponsors are too hard to come by nowadays and Carney isn't getting any younger either.

As someone else mentioned, I really hope the Carney angle is just a smokescreen.

The fawning over Foz is apparent even by Arko and points to why Chez was so open about shopping around.

I think its a disgrace how the Club releases a statement about Foz, but the current Dally M Half back, Clive Churchill Medalist departure is not sen as a loss by the Club nor Arko - WTF ?

Arko's influence did not persuade Foz to stay, so why would his opinion matter to Players out in the market? :wondering:

Carney has more knee problems than Hodko, surely there are better options for next year.:banghead:

Mateo killed it on Saturday and every expert had ridiculed 2v for picking him as our 5/8.
Mateo is 194cm and 108kg and will probably face off against T-ex at 192cm and 118kg on Friday. Bigger is better :p

Club did not officially announce anything about Chez apart from 'Offer Withdrawn'.
The year's of service and achievement is unrecognized for one but not the other:cool:

The old news is that the Club is openly playing favourites - does not bode well for recruitment as Players will know that they have to be in clique to be valued:cool:

If it's good enough for Arko, then I would at least have to consider it.

Buckley's chance of getting either of the above players.

Burgess will only go back to the Vermin, because Bath will want their million back, and that's short change for the owners AND the NRL will simply forgo the cap to allow it to happen, it will be called " Special Dispensation".

Carney I imagine will stay in the ESL, as they don't have anywhere near the same regulations and media coverage as the NRL, so he can be as big a grub as he wants over the and get away with it.

    Next???

Yes, sadly - "once an imbecile, always an imbecile" I think. He's had too many second chances. IF Burgess wants to come back, we'd have to be a strong option with Luke B and Joe Kelly here now. But still a long shot, and hugely expensive. Is Tamou as bad these days as everyone is saying? He's still young enough to forge a "Manly" career with us - time enough to turn it around.

Carney played well at origin level and would be cheaper than maloney. I wouldn't pay overs for Sam burgess. Tamou would do a good job at manly.

I wouldn't have a problem with Carney provided the right contract conditions are put in place. He just dies stupid things but hasn't gurt others like Lui, Ferguson, .... the list goes on.

I've said it before but I'd be very happy with: carney, Elgey/Maloney , T Burgess and J Tamou
