There are plenty of posters who keep saying Gutherson for 5/8. Has anyone actually seen him play 5/8?

Yeah he did ok, and he has a good kicking game. He's a footballer. Translating it into 1st grade is another matter of course.

This thread is laughable.

A fit Matai walks into just about any NRL team.
Power running game, power defensive game.
Has set Tafua up countless times.
Etc, etc

Laughable to even suggest he would be the first one dropped for Tommy T.
Also tommy t is 18 and already bigger than many players. He will muscle up in his own time. GI was lankier at the same age.

Whilst Matai has some big hits in him, he gets caught out by speedy centres. So picture this. We keep on putting TomT to reserves and on the wing, he gets disenchanted as we still have Matai/Stewart around and a club offers him $700k a year with a guaranteed of playing fullback/centre.

Why cant he play centre next year ? We need to guarantee this freak a spot in 1st grade .

You'd be mad to chuck muscle on an 18 year old (who I might add is the best fullback prospect in the game) so he can play in the centres and get mentally and physically bashed for a couple of years before shedding the weight and attempting to restore himself to his former potential?!

Further, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the way Skivvy has played this year. In fact, outside of Snake and Jake T, I actually think he has been our most consistent player all year. When we have been struggling to get forward, he comes in and absolutely charges into the opposition and gets the set rolling. He must be doing the right things for Taufua to have scored so many tries lately, by working effectively off the ball (attracting defenders away from the outside) and getting out of the way when he is not needed.

Let's not forget THAT HIT on Tyrell either.

Tom T is a fullback.

Centre is not his go.

A year or two on the wing ( with some interchanging with Stewart) is exactly the learning curve he needs.

Let the kid devolop at his own pace, but he needs to be playing fulltime first grade next season.

Inglis played wing centre and five eighth before he became the best fullback in the game. Anyone who was lucky enough to watch him come through QLD cup knew that was his spot. Slater played wing and centre for a while. What a lot of people here are relating to is th fact Snake came through as an out and out fullback, but consider the depth we had at the time. Tommy T will benefit from any first grade experience and learn the game reading defence in other spots. Will Hopoate was the best young player I ever saw come through for us and killed it at fullback for us but didn't hurt him playing wing or centre. Two years off hurt him. Tell Turbo T he's our fullback in 2018 and he's gonna learn n first grade until then.

Yep on the wing.
buggered if I know what Matai moments you're watching.

Matai's value is not just that he's a strike weapon in both attack and defence.

It's his unique ability to get us out of the red zone with good go-forward on early tackles in a set.

I saw him play for Norths Brizzo @ Burleigh years ago.tall and lanky, just as kick off happens, Bennett and Andrew (cooking the books ) Gee stroll over to the fence. Ingliss gets the ball in the in goal and puts on a glide, swerve, step, speed show that I'd not seen before...it was incredible. No sooner had he put the ball down, look over and Bennett and Gee look like they'd won gold lotto.
I'm not comparing Tommy to Gi. If was just a pivotal moment when you know that regardless of age and experience they have to be in first grade....now. Otherwise you'll have someone like Bellamy sneak in and snare him...Jesus...Tommy T in purple...

The stuff about Tom becoming even more senational with some added size is definateley a great thing - the part about dropping Matai.....not so much.
Matai is underrated as close to the best tough runner to earn field position in the NRL & change the momentum of the attack to set up good field position for the halves & defensively up with the best

Agree. Tom is a fullback. He is not a winger but Manly don't have a specialised winger for there, who is quick enough from a standing position to get back in position / defence etc. On the 5th tackle none of the wingers are getting back to be ready for the kick, instead move up with the rest of the pack and have been caught out with tries being scored past them. You wouldn't play Matai on the wing or fullback or Buhrer on the wing as Matai best position is a centre. and Buhrer is a forward. You put players in their correct positions Centre and second row are similar and you have to have some mongrel to be there as you're taking on some big boys running at you

By Matai's standards he has been well below par. His dummy half runs have slowly come back, but nowhere near his exploits from the first half of last year. Whilst he bangs hard in defence, dont let his blindside shot on Tyrell cloud the fact that he does struggle against quality speedy centres.

Anyone who has played this game knows the majority of backline players dont like being tackled. The intimidation factor of Matai and his young shoulder apprentuce Jorge has and is causing waves of skid marks in opposing centres jocks.

Matai gets caught out as foran cant tacke. Foran has missed more tackles than any other player for us in the last five years. Check the stats and could be second to Turnstyle red who has been woeful in the centres all year.
