NRL launch 2010 Telstra Premiership draw

NRL Tue, 22 Sep 2009 18:15:00

Just four teams are in the race for the 2009 Telstra Premiership but from today the remaining twelve can start mapping their campaign for 2010.

The National Rugby League today launched the 2010 Telstra Premiership draw with this year’s Minor Premiers St George Illawarra scheduled to play Parramatta in the opening round of 2010 along with the Broncos hosting the Cowboys and the Rabbitohs home to the Roosters.

The season kicks off on Friday, March 12, and will include feature games in Perth and Adelaide as well as the launch of Melbourne’s new stadium.

Next year’s draw features a Heritage Round (Rd 10) between the Bulldogs and Dragons, the Wests Tigers v Rabbitohs and Manly v the Eels, a dedicated Women in League Round (Rd 16) and a Rivalry Round (Rd 19) that will ignite the passions of fans across the game in the race to the Telstra Premiership Finals.

“There’s no doubt that even with the biggest matches of 2009 still ahead of us there are already thousands of fans wanting to sign up as club members for 2010,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“The excitement of this year’s finals series means that you simply want the football to keep going.”

The draw will again feature 26 rounds (including two byes per team), with four weeks of representative matches during the season, a four-week finals series and a Four Nations series at the end of the year.

Friday, May 7, will see Australia take on New Zealand in a Test Match (venue yet to be announced) and City v Country (venue yet to be announced).

Queensland’s bid to extend the longest series winning streak in Origin history kicks off at ANZ Stadium on May 26 with the return game at Suncorp on June 16 and the final match in Sydney on July 7.

And if the interstate rivalry is not enough, Round 19 will stir up plenty of passion among fans when Rivalry Round sees the Rabbitohs take on the Dragons, the Titans against the Broncos and the Panthers against the Eels.

The Glory Bound Rounds will also receive dedicated promotion during the year, as will the Close the Gap Round (Rd 24) that will include the Reconciliation Cup between the Cowboys and the Bulldogs.

The Grand Final will be played on Sunday, October 3.

This year’s draw has again ensured that clubs will deliver fans the matches they most want to see each year.

“Again we have worked with the clubs to ensure that the draw takes into account the contests that fans most want to see,” NRL Chief Operating Officer, Mr Graham Annesley, said today.

“The draw dictates that every club must play each other once and all clubs then ranked the teams their fans would most like to see at home in the remaining games.

“Every club has received its top four preferences and across all clubs we have been able to meet six out of the top seven rankings.

“It’s an incredibly complex exercise but one which we think will deliver an outstanding competition for the players and the fans.”

The full 2010 Telstra Premiership draw is available at here

Clubs will have until Friday November 6 to allocate their match venues. The NRL will then issue a draw with confirmed venues. Scheduling of match days and kick off times for the first five weeks of 2010 should be available by the end of November 2009.

A couple of things that stick out for me looking at that

Tough start to the year, 3 of the 1st 4 away from home, also for the 1st time in a long time, Brisbane have to travel to Brookie and there is no Suncorp game for us

Our first home game is also likely not to be until Round 5. It will be 10/1 on that our first "home" game will actually be at Gosford.

Round 5 is just too long to wait to have Manly playing at Brookie.

Correct you are Pete, that is not a good scenario at all

I can see rounds 9-14 being the crucial part of the season, some tough games in there

I hope the Wests game is at Leichhardt.  Although a bit of a graveyard, better that than the trek out to Cambelltown.

Toughen up DSM!, a trip to bogan central is just the thing to give you a balanced view of the world.

I guess the clubs way of looking at it is that fans like us will be desperate to see a home game at Brookie even though it will be against the sharks. Really smart actually.

Think of it, a sharks v Manly match might only usually attract 12k fans max
but considering it will be the first official home ground in a while it has a high probability of attracting 15k.

Pissed off that there is no Suncorp match though!! That must of been a preference that Broncos missed out on, or maybe they didn't want us to play them considering we have a good record up there?

At least we still got skilled stadium to go to against the titans, we will be out in force again!

No home game until round 5 and then it is against the sharks.  Once again we play the sharks, Titans, raiders, warriors and souths at home.

These are generally pretty poor games compared to the other 5 home games.  The club might struggle to sell season tickets for an extra $100 a year to in reality watch 5 excellent home games.

Did we have any input into the draw vis a vis our preferences?  My impression is it's a horror draw, perhaps we didn't ask for anything seeing as we have no CEO.

My understanding is that the firm dates are once again in the hands of of the TV directors and about 5 weeks out. Anyone planning away travel to a game will be stuck with the not-so-fantastic system we have always had.

They did say there was some intention to change that next year.  Obviously Gallop has been rolled at the negotiation table again.

DO we actually have no back to back home games, WTF!

It looks like rounds 9 & 10 are the only back to back home games at Brookie but it wouldn't surprise me if one of those home games is at Gosford.

[/quote]  No way would we take a fixture against Eels or Dragons to Gosford.  We'll play Newcastle and another out of town team there.

Regardless of home/away I'd expect us to have 4 of those first 5 games pencilled in for wins with Parra being the tough one.

The bunnies get a 4/5 home game start, nice to know that Mr Gallop enjoyed his stay at Coffs...lol

Does being the last game listed in Rnds 1 and 4 mean they're Monday games?
Rnd 3 against Newcastle might be up at Bluetongue...

And i wouldn't worry about Souths - You gotta give them and their fans a head start by plenty of home games (ANZ, seriously...)so they can win, get their hopes up like this year and see them fail from round 10 onwards.  It's hilarious and i love it.

Yeah I know that one of the two games at Gosford would be against the Knights but as for the second game to be played there, who knows.  I just wonder if the NRL has any input on which other game is to be played there and with us having only one back to back home game scheduled is the reason why I suggested that the second home game might get scheduled for Gosford.  I was never saying that they would.
