GOLD Coast Titans coach John Cartwright has been rushed to hospital for surgery, and will miss his team's clash with Newcastle tomorrow.

In the latest blow in a cursed season for the Titans, Cartwright - who turns 46 next month - was taken to hospital after suffering excruciating pain, and is believed to be sufferingf from acute apendicitis or a twisted bowel.

Titans assistant coaches Trevor Gillmeister and Steve Murphy will share the coaching duties in Cartwright's absence.

Gillmeister, speaking to couriermail.com.au this morning prior to the Titans' final training session, said the team's thoughts were with Cartwright.

``He's in good spirits mate, they're not really sure exactly what they're dealing with yet, but I think the plan is that he will go into surgery and they will have a look around in there,'' Gillmeister said.

``His nickname is 'Hoss', so the boys have been giving him a bit of stick about getting the Hendra virus.

``It's a shame for Carty, and we hope it's nothing too serious for him. But the boys are all focused on doing well for him, and helping speed his recovery with a good win against Newcastle.

``Steve and I will run the show until he gets back. We should be able to work it out between us. The boys have trained well, and hopefully that will come across on the field.''
