EX-BLUES captain Steve Mortimer believes under-pressure Manly winger David Williams deserves another crack at Origin next month. Opinion was divided on Monday about giving Williams a second chance to make up for his Origin debut in Sydney last week. The bearded-winger scored a fine try in the second half, but some glaring mistakes unravelled his night. Mortimer told The Manly Daily the 22-year-old should get a reprieve for Game III in Brisbane on July 15. “I’d give him another chance,” Mortimer, the former Canterbury great, said. “He’s still young and very capable. “He made some bad mistakes in the second game ... it’s not so much the two balls he dropped, it’s the stupid ball he kicked away. “But he still should get another chance.” But former NSW utility back Greg Alexander was not so sure. “There’s some pressure on him,” the Panthers 1991 premiership winner said. “Wolfy’s a good player, but maybe he’s dropped back in the field a bit. “It was his first game, so maybe there were some nerves and there are some blokes putting their hands up.” Ex-Blues and Manly winger Craig Hancock said Williams deserves a second cap in Brisbane. “For sure (he deserves another go) ... he just dropped a couple of balls from hard hits,” Hancock said. “NSW have got nothing to lose now, they need to start building for the future.” Another former Blues and Sea Eagle winger John Hopoate said Williams should be there. “No doubt they should stick with him,” the heavyweight boxer said. “Everyone makes mistakes. He’ll come back better next time.”
